Former England manager Terry Venables has hailed the form of Sunderland midfield duo Lee Cattermole and Jordan Henderson and hinted that the pair both have a bright future ahead at international level.
Both Black Cats club captain Cattermole and dynamic creative force Henderson were at the heart of Steve Bruce’s side during the shock surprise 3-0 victory over reigning champions Chelsea producing a performance, which for ‘El Tel’ has been second to none so far this term.
“The boys [Jordan] Henderson and [Lee] Cattermole who played for Sunderland against Chelsea at the weekend; they were excellent,” Venables told Sport.co.uk in an exclusive interview.
“That pair’s performance together in central midfield was as good as I have seen so far this season. Henderson’s ability to control a moving ball and pass on the run first time was excellent.
“The Arsenal boys and the Barcelona squad, they do that short passing but he seems to be able to do it over even longer distances and even more accurately. The two of them were non-stop and they completely outdid the three Chelsea midfielders.”
Speaking ahead of Henderson’s full England debut, Venables also made clear that now was the time for Fabio Capello to test the next generation in the hope of launching a successful European Championship campaign in Ukraine and Poland in two years time.
“These guys being called up have all got the ability, but they’ve got to prove it against a high level team. They also need to be able to react well when things are going badly, especially if the crowd are getting on the team’s back and the media are baying for blood.
"These are the biggest tests, not so much the game itself, the game outside the game; the game of pressure.”
