Ten games in.

I'd take stability for this season, I guess.

A good cup run would be nice. We do need to be getting the best out of our "marquee" players. Signing Giaccherini was a coup, signing Johnson was a coup... hopefully Alvarez can be similar (even if he's only a loan). When we spend money, we need to spend it wisely... PVA looks to be a good signing.

But most importantly, we need to be a bit more adventurous.

I think the first 10 games support what a lot of people thought, our squad is far too thin and we're going to struggle but there are worse teams than us.

Agree that Gus' decision making with Wickham and Buckley is very odd.

1 point below where we should be from a minimum of ones gained so far, at the least you should be 2 more than games played, as long as you are in that category of less points or the same points than games played it's a relegation battle.

That would mean in the next 5 games a minimum of 6 points is required for me.

Think ten games into a season is a decent indicator as to how the season may pan out.
What are people's thoughts so fa?
Last night was an ordinary premier league game played by two ordinary premier league sides which for all I can't say I expected us to win I certainly wasn't surprised we did.
I think we'll finish above palace this season so I couldn't quite understand the doom mongers talking of us taking a battering down there.
I thought we'd struggle back in August and saw nothing to change my mind since then.
Only surprises for me is that wickham hasn't kicked but saying that he's playing out of position which doesn't help and the Gus seems to favour Buckley over Johnson. Find the latter baffling to be honest however but I'm sure Poyet has his reasons.

Cnt disagree with that tbh! The buckley over johnson decision is just baffling mind! Say what you like about johnson he scored 10 goals last year and can change a game, you cant take that out of a v average sland team

Up till Southampton we had the 2nd best defence in the Prem and goalscoring has been the problem.

Three excellent goals yesterday and if we keep that up we will climb to midtable at least.

My thoughts, 'I like the Third Strip'

Buckley is a good player man, don't understand the stick he gets!

I had us on 51 points this season.
After ten games we've got one point fewer than I thought.
So fifty points.
I would love a boring mid table position looking down at the clubs scrambling for points at the bottom.

Was convinced that we would lose last night.
I'm still worried as we have yet to put in a very good performance and it's almost a third of the season in.
If we can pick up points from teams around us, especially away from home we may be okay.
I still think it's going to be a last gasp lurch over the line to stay up this season though as I can't see us mirroring last seasons run in miracle

if we could take away the 8-0 (a freak result which could have really hurt the team) and call it a 3-0 loss, then the gift we gave to arsenal which without the mistakes was probably a draw everything would be so much rosier.
like most, if not all fans, i am at a loss to try to figure out why we have AJ sat on the bench while CW is thrown onto the wing where he is never going to contribute much (not saying he is a crap player but the lad is no winger).
surely we can fit AJ and buckley into the team to provide more ammo, i also think both are able to swap wings and as they have a different style this could be a massive advantage.
fletch looks eager and mean again so imho if CW wants a game he will either have to come on as a sub and grab some goals or hope that gus goes with 2 up top.
if on the other hand gus is keeping AJ out of the team at a time when we need our better players out there then he does need questioning, granted we do not know the full story if there is a story behind it, but the fans are bound to wonder.
anyway, after 10 games it would look a lot like most of my school reports 'can do better but satisfactory work'

Agree with this. Problem is what's the answer as with personnel at his disposal is there really a great deal more that Poyet could do?

There lies the real issue.

I'm a fan of poyet's and want him to stay as I think he has shown enough to suggest he has an idea of how he wants teams to play BUT despite him suggesting otherwise he must accept some of the blame for the incomings this season.

One massive improvement would have been some pace in the forward positions and at centre half as this would have helped us massively at both ends of the pitch...pace up front makes teams wary of you meaning they sit deeper therefore giving the midfield more time on the ball and pace at centre half can get you out of trouble at times. I accept that we can't change things overnight but the reliance on two ageing centre halves, a wasted loan in terms of Coates and a lack of investment in any pace, (bar PVA), still leaves me with some questions about Gus.

I think we will stay up but to make it comfortable we need to add to the team wisely in january which is always a difficult and over priced market

Superb post. Sums up my own thoughts better than I could myself!
Have a like.

We are shite but occasionally we click and turn in a decent result. My guess we finish around 14th, hovering slightly above the drop zone, with absolutely nowt to get excited about and very little in terms of finances, coaching, league position etc to suggest we can attract much in the way of name brand players. I think we'll rely on either an academy player coming through or some luck with a diamond in the rough like Phillips was (not saying we'll find anyone who turns out THAT good) to help us step up any higher.
Still not convinced by Gus, some baffling decisions and I reckon there's a lot of on the job training going on there. When we occasionally do well is it down to him or just plain luck?

Obviously it's luck when we win but entirely his fault if we lose.

Cheer Douglas.

I'm just waiting for the abuse from some though, being able to see some positives but still being willing to ask questions about poyet et al doesnt go down well.

On another note just reading Bodyline Autopsy and decided to re live the tv series on bodyline, old jardine was quite the character

If Fletcher stays healthy and scores goals we will be ok. Still lots of work to do with this team. Got to get better in the transfer market

Pre season I feared the worst, then up until Southampton I was pleasantly surprised at our form. Since then, and including last night if I'm honest, we have looked every bit a relegation team. The difference last night was our ability to take our chances.
