Want a longer lens for a trip next month is it worthwhile considering a teleconvertor?

I have a Canon 1.4x III and although all the reviews are positive, it does noticably degrade the image quality IMO, never tried the 2x.

If its a safari or summit special I'd be tempted to rent a lens.

I think it probably depends to some extent what camera you are using. If it is a recent one with lots of megapixels, you can often get away with cropping the image. If you only have 5 megapixels to start with, it won't crop as well!

You lose both image quality and light with a teleconverter, and many combinations of lenses and converters also cripple the autofocus to a greater or lesser extent, particularly at wide apertures.

I do have a teleconverter (1.4x), and with good light, it produces slightly better images than taking a crop from the photo, but with lower light I would generally ditch it.

As @oROSSo says, a better option might be to spend the money renting a lens.
