Teaching someone to drive

Spent hours and hours with my lads learning on the huge empty car park behind Macro in Washington. Don't think its there now. They eventually took proper lessons, but saved a bomb as they were quite competent by that stage.

Did the same but in Washington car auction car park , unfortunately it has got gates on now for anyone thinking about doing the same.

Simply show her how to make the car move and slow down using only the clutch pedal. Once she has mastered this the rest will be easy.

I'm assuming it's a manual and fuel injection.

Once the bairn was confident with the concept of driving I did many hours in the area of the test centre with her as there and back was an hour’s lesson with the instructor . It wasn’t too bad as I’ve worked with people who have actually passed their test who are worse than she was and they are going round the outside of traffic on blue lights.
I am a very bad passenger normally in a car but I’m sure it gave her more confidence than if I hadn’t have done loads of hours with her but She wasn’t keen when I kept telling her of shitty jobs I’d done on various junctions or on bits of road.

Aye, did it with my oldest daughter. My advice is don't do it marra, not worth the hassle and she progressed 10 times faster once she had a few lessons. Fine for extra time behind the wheel, but get an instructor in to nail the basics, dual controls and self control are the two things I was lacking.

Splash out on the first few lessons to get them the basics. When they can start the car, drive relatively comfortably and do the basics. Then take over.

Thats what happened with me, and its how ill teach the lad one day I think

Get yourself a mirror. They cost about £3.50. Worth every penny
Great tip thanks.

Its alongside lessons mate, her instructor advised it. Lessons have been on and off due to the lockdowns.

Spot on then, helps them build up confidence with the extra wheel time and much less chance of freezing during her test. I thought you were going to have a go without lessons as I did, never agian like.

I’ve had a go at plastering, electrics, pluming, tiling etc.

Teaching your kids to drive? Not a chance. Leave it to the professionals.

Still taking lessons now, I’m a good driver, pretty confident of that.

I know I wouldn’t be if my dad or my mates had took me out to try and learn as I’ve been offered in the past.

Leave it to a professional.

Sadly it was in the covid lockdown days, no other option but to do so. Loved it looking back, and something to tell the future grandbairns.

Got my young un an old banger and just sat in with him while he drove about really . He was getting lessons too though . Went down to york and back one day. They really get the hang when they can do long stints uninterrupted.

The good thing about professional driving instructors is that they teach you to pass your test.

Then you can start learning to drive properly.

exactly what i was going to say. my daughter just passed, and i took her for a few lessons but you need to teach them how to pass the test, she could drive fine. i'd not teach her something and she'd probably fail as it was almost 40 years since i passed mine.
"you can start learning to drive properly." thats exactly what i told her  , which is what me dad told me in 1986
