Tax Return

Just looked it up. Seems as though by the letter of the law it isn’t, but HMRC allow it in most straightforward circumstances. Trust them to come up with an unclear way of dealing with it. 😂

I would allow it.

Fine for rents accounts and self employment etc. Not fine for employment, bank interest, dividend income etc.

Basically cannot have them if they are being incurred in the individual’s personal capacity as a taxpayer, unlike their capacity as a trader

Always leave it the last week even though it’s a piece of piss to do. Always then get screwed for an underpayment by the tax man even though I’m PAYE so god knows how I can be underpaying

Every year I tell myself I'll start early and usually get it done at 10 minutes to midnight on the last day. French tax runs from January to December and the returns aren't due until June in my Departement (it varies) so no excuses really. The first couple of years I paid an English accountant but I soon realised that he was taking the piss when he asked me just to email him the figures the third year and I've done it myself ever since. Fairly simple as I am retired and my affairs are fairly straightforward but the penalties are monstrous if, for example, you forget to tell them you've opened a new bank account or closed one down and they always manage to change at least one little thing on the form every year, just to keep you on your toes. 10% penalty for late payment.

It is but not the full amount. I'd imagine there's a private use adjustment in there somewhere.

If you're PAYE why are you doing a return? Unless you're lucky enough to earn over £100K?

Been working 55 hours a week during the working week, then another 6-10 on the weekend for the whole month to get the tax returns done. People are still sending the stuff in now with an expectation of them being done on time.

Brain is absolutely fried there is no way the standard of work churned out can be as good as earlier in the year. Had one send in a messy Australian rental property today, will all need converting FFS.

I would like to make an example of the repeat offenders and let them get fined and pay interest but not allowed.

1.5 days left!!!
Can't you just put in estimates for the stragglers?

I have to do one because I used to be a company director.

According to the website I don’t need to submit a tax return.

Am I right in taking you can just ring up to confirm any pension AVCs to ensure the enhanced relief is obtained on those?

Ring them and ask to be taken out of self assessment. Even if you're a director with untaxed income (dividends) less than £10K you still don't NEED to be in self assessment.
Just make sure your PAYE code is correct before you do it.

Yeah, last day now.

Had some dick email me about 17 excel pages of income and similar expenses at 8 o clock last night.

With a note in the bottom saying btw I have started a new partnership past year with 3 others and have breached vat do I need to do anything?

Would love to email back you need to find a new accountant mate.

Not expecting that late of a night. The partner is a staunch mag and is going to the football. That will probably be the cut off apart from submissions.

If they are elderly or have been unwell I will do everything I can to help them not get fined.

Some clients I will let get fined as its the same shit year after year. They send in shite in the last week. You rush it through and email them additional questions and they ignore your email/calls till the last second.
