Taking the dog for a walk

I think most dog owners are quite responsible, I don’t get your fears, you tend to find the bad natured dogs are never off the lead.
Seems slightly over protective for me either that or wherever he walks his dog is full of thick heads - I’m fortunate enough to live somewhere with responsible owners 99% of the time

When I was at Elba Park the other day there was a women with 4 dogs all off their leads, when she saw us she just took them a different way. The dog that ran over to us had owners that thought it funny when our dog decided to chase theirs away, it didn’t even stop and just bumped into her at almost full pelt, maybes it had too much hair over its eyes.

Hahaha - that’s it mate I reckon 99% of dogs get on if you just let them get on with it

A dog on a lead can't really cause the problems I mentioned. If only the law was stricter.

Lucky you.

It's the one percent that are the problem. Usually staffies or greyhounds in my experience.
Stricter how.
Don’t allow them the freedom to have a good run about?
Get a cat.
I've got two cats.
So do you just walk yours on a lead or have him to heal during every walk?
Only lead. He's just little, doesn't need too much walking. He runs around in the garden and plays fetch there.

Never yet met an aggressive Staffie or Greyhound off lead. Plenty of small dogs whose owners dismiss their dogs poor behaviour as funny because they’re dinky.

*please no showering comments*

How much time does it take you to walk the dog generally speaking?

I used to take my sisters dog for a walk she was only small a small dog so about 15-20 minutes and she was done.

I never fail to see someone walking a dog when I leave the house these days.

woof
Two or three hours at dawn, then an hour or so later in the day. The exercise is for me, the dogs just come along for the crack.

We all have our day-to-day dog-walking routes but where do people go for weekend/longer walks?

Beaches:
Roker, Seaburn, South Shields - need to pay for parking/dogs not welcomed all-year round.
Started going to Crimdon Dene beach recently which has free parking.
If more time/fancy a drive-out then can't beat the Northumberland coastline.

Woods & parks:
Chester-le-Street park/riverside
Herrington Country Park
Penshaw Monument & woods
Fatfield riverside & woods
Elba Park
Hetton Lyons Park
Waldridge Fell
Chopwell woods
Beamish woods
Lambton Estate & Beamish museum but dogs need to be kept on leads.

Any other good local walks the SMB can recommend?
Linemonkey must be one of the few dog walkers that does not use Hendon beach judging by the dog mess that’s left there.I hasten to add there is hardly any mess left on the beach or promenade.Everybody put it in the bags but what percentage deposits in (bins should be more )of a take it home.
I use all three routes down and back from beach, It’s when you use the middle path (footpath) That I noticed the amount of poo bags that have been thrown into the long grass.First time I noticed this was when collecting black berries. Then some people began to tie bags around handrail at the Old paper mill-site
Before anybody tells me that the biggest cause of rubbish at the beach is humans I totally agree.

Before lockdown i used to go down there 3/4 times a week with black bag which when I filled up I put in bins or if full take home

If your dog is smaller than a seagull, it's shite.
And very, very puntable.
My dog can put his paws on my shoulders when I’m standing up but is a very timid rescue, persistently disobedient small fluffy dogs are the bane of our lives with owners that think my dog is the problem if he grumbles at them because he’s big. Had a french bulldog bite his nose and he understandably snapped back and the owner went ballistic saying ours should be put down, he’s just a mongrel, my dog cost 2k etc. My then nine year old son was with me so restrained myself but it’s bloody annoying.

They’re lovely dogs I’m sure but there has been an absolute explosion of poorly trained or socialised cockapoo’s that persistently bother my hound and their owners have a propensity to be really arsey if he grumbles or snaps at them. He’s perfectly fine with most dogs but has definitely developed a dislike of poodle crosses! He was nipped by an out of control standard poodle a couple of years ago so is a bit on edge with anything poodle like but fine if they know dog etiquette.
Walks wise, 30 mins in morning, hour in evening and sometimes a quick pootle in between or last thing before bed.

People with small dogs seem to be really lazy about training them because the consequences of them being badly behaved are rarely as great as with a large dog.

Pathetic that. Frenchies can fuck off.
At the end of the day, if a dog reacts badly that's on them and their owners - regardless of breed.

The dog usually dictates this. Sometimes open the front door and if it's raining she turns round and goes back in the house.
My dog does this. He basically leads the way on our walks and tells me where he wants to go. If I try and walk a route he doesn’t fancy, he’ll just bed down and not budge. due to their low centre of gravity, it’s a hard making an unwilling dachshund move.

He’s smart so knows how to get to the places he likes - currently he likes walking to and around The Gherkin and can take me there from the flat. If he doesn’t have a specific route in mind he’ll just walk until he’s faced with a choice, look in either direction then pick which way he wants to go.
If that's true, then we need fenced off areas where dogs can run around. It works in other countries.
We don’t.

Things are good as they are. Just make sure to punish bad owners of dogs properly and don’t punish the dogs of responsible owners
You are breaking the law if he's not under control. If he has good recall and comes back to you upon request then no harm done. My problem is with those who don't care.
My dog won’t walk more than 10 yards away from me. Partly because he is well behaved and partly because he’s soft as shite.

I don’t even have to finish calling his name before he’s back by my side. He won’t approach other dogs when off his lead unless we’re with him and he avoids children because kids are infinitely worse behaved than dogs - lost count of the amount of times I’ve seen parents ask if their kid can pet a dog and the kid belts it across the head or puts a finger in its eye.

My dog shouldn’t be punished and have to stay on his lead because of a small (in my own experience) percentage of dog owners can’t look afte their dogs. Just ban kids from there areas. They’re little ***** anyway

Tell them that by buying a Frenchie for several grand they’re contributing to animal cruelty and that they shouldn’t exist as a breed, it’s unfair on them.
