Tactically just about perfect gus.

I know, I did exactly the same thing. After our capitulation against Norwich, I feared we'd gone, but all the other results went our way. However, my real fear is our lack of threat up top. We are simply rank awful. I saw 'Boring' Stoke dismantle Villa Sunday, scoring 4 in the process and it sunk in how much trouble we are actually in. Norwich have a shocking run in ( admittedly ours is not too bright ), but your point re beating teams in and around us is the crux. We have the answer right there if the worst happens.
Yes, just think the difference three points off Palace, instead of one, three points off Norwich (twice) we would be sitting pretty (almost) and they would be minus those points. Likewise Fulham, Hull (that's another six) it beggars belief.

we conceded posession from the off, it was poor finishing and bad refereeing that kept us in it not a tactical masterplan.

someone who actually saw what happened inthe game?

f***ing hell, only losing 2-1 seems to have convinced people all is well with the world. we were very lucky last night, so much went for us and still we lost, never looked like scoring from open play, messed with the defensive system and personnel again, discovered a shocking player, didn't bother with our best players and yet people are looking at it like it's proof we can stay up

The other teams amongst us aren't beating anyone either.

How come they're not doomed?
I reckon the two below us are pretty well doomed, barring some miracle. Just look at the games we have thrown away because we weren't prepared for the opposition to get at us (I'm quoting Bridcutt after Saturday's game). That alone tells a story that it's not simply the players.

It does indeed. The Hull, Fulham an Palace games at home have cost us massively. Those plus the horror shows away, especially at Palace again and WBA, have left us looking really vulnerable. Great home displays at home against Liverpool, Man City, Man. U and even Arsenal maybe show we have something, but when it comes to games you've mentioned, games we actually need to get something from, we just seem to lose the plot. All if's, and & maybes, but it really is frustrating.

I looked at the league table on Saturday and, at first glance, things might not be as bad as they seem. Then I dug a little deeper, forthcoming fixtures, recent form, goals for, goals against, opposition fixtures, and I think we really are doomed. There's always the chance of a miracle but time is running out. What team can stay up when they can't beat their rivals at home?
But we beat our local rivals home and away and got to a cup final, keep the faith man! Whilst I admit its not looking good, I wont believe we're down until its mathematically impossible for us to stay up.

we still conceded 2, we didn't nullify their goal threat.

With the rate they have been scoring goals and the way we have been playing/losing that could have quite easily been 5 or 6 nil... I though Gus' tactics were spot on!

it could have easily been 5 or 6 nil anyway, vergini should have been off and sturridge and suarez had plenty more chances they fluffed

I thought the tactics were ok, we done well(ish).

Liverpool's goals consisted of a free kick and a lucky deflection... From open play we nullified them very well... A hammering would have been a right kick in the teeth for both the club and our goal difference... We have averted both... It's mean nothing though if we fail to turn up against West Ham...[DOUBLEPOST=1395914039][/DOUBLEPOST]

So we rode our luck a bit... We had chance as well you know...

Not completely (doubt it is possible to nullify it completely unless you do it yourself and play Altidore and Graham up front) but many on here (myself included) were predicting 4/5/6-0 and the fact that the only scored 2, both of which were due to individual brilliance, or a deflection rather than Liverpool getting in behind us and causing havoc. I didn't feel that our goal was under any serious threat until the last 20 mins when we started going a bit gung ho.

that said, if you want to be picky Mannone was at fault for the first goal (didn't line his wall up properly and took a step to his right before the ball was kicked - if hadn't done that, he wold have saved it comfortably) and Brown was at fault for the second by giving Sturridge too much room to start with

We had a few opportunities to use Wickham's long throw but persisted with Bardsley taking throw ins. Our goal showed their glaring weakness in the air against set pieces and we missed a trick not trying this ploy.
Played forward much quicker than normal but thought Giaccherini was a peripheral figure and Gus doesn't seem to have any idea how to get the best from him.

aye, we played the the formation and players to excel in a direct style of football but whilst the last 3 or 4 games have been longball we tippy tapped it around. baffling

Could have been what with his wild leg swing at the ball and him being out of position a couple of times keeping them onside but Dossena tires so was the obvious candidate to go off. Vergini had a bad game but he is a fit and athletic player so I can see why he was left on.

Vergini is fit and athletic???????:eek::eek::eek:

You must have seen him play loads for his former clubs to come to that conclusion marra

Didn't get it myself. They had more chances and we had fuck all until he decided to change it, by then we were fucked. It was obvious it wasn't working as they were still getting chances left right n centre.

As I said before, we are a better team when we are set up to attack the opposition and go for it. Cause them problems. For that we need AJ and more importantly Ki on the pitch and setup so he can attack teams. Bridcutt defending the back line and Catts ball winning further up the pitch and helping out Bridcutt.

If we had that formation for the whole game, and played like we did in the last 20 or so minutes, we might have got something out of it. As it is we huffed and puffed doing sweet fuck all until they were 2 nil up before we decided to go and try win it.
