Tactically just about perfect gus.

Tactically just about perfect, 2-0 down at half time, team changes to make things better, we lost again, think again. Must do better!

We were great in the first half. And we were 1-0 down at half time.

That aside - great analysis.

He'll eventually go and we will again drink from the pool of mediocre managers, as befits SAFC. Some will like him, some will not. He, too, will move on.
Rinse and repeat.

yeah imagine the shit someone like me would have brought in during january compared to gus's wonder signings.

I'm not arguing with you about the fact he may not be 100% ready for the first team, though he did do an OK job last night. But I will argue about the instant kneejerk labeling of him being shit...

I would have taken off altidore , but that is not the point .
We put out a side that was designed to nullify liverpools goal threat in the last third , up until catts's ( who i thought apart from that was excellent ) mistake it went to plan.
Then the subs second half to try and get back into the game worked
With 4 mins to go liverpool were trying to run down the clock in the corner we had them that rattled.
After a performance like that I have nothing but praise for the lads.
Unlike the arsenal game where we laid diwn from the start , this gives me a little hope but make no mistake 3 pts v the hammers or we are down.
I think 3-5-2 could be the formation for us (and have stated this previously this season)
The extra protection of 3 centre halves, effectively letting Wes play as sweeper, 2 full backs bombing up and down the wing (with the added protection of the back 3 if they get caught up the field)
2 central midfielders just winning the ball and sitting
1 attacker floting behind a front two - that's 2 strikers!

After an insipid first half, we really gave Liverpool a game last night and with a few tweaks I think 3-5-2 could be the way to go for the rest of the season. The only question is what to do with Ki and Johnson - both could play the role "in the hole" but not sure Ki is suited to a holding role - he looked very effective last night playing in an advanced role, but to fit him and Johnson in the team we may have to sacrifice a striker.

Mannone
O'Shea Brown Vergini
Bardsley Cattermole Bridcutt Alonso
Johnson
Borini Wickham
or

Mannone
O'Shea Brown Vergini
Bardsley Cattermole Bridcutt Alonso
Johnson Ki
Borini
Vergini had a bit of a shocker last night, but this could be the perfect way to blood him in to the team by having the extra protection of 2 CHs next to him to mop up where necessary - either that or stick Cuellar/Roberge in there but both are equally as mistake prone

Giving Johnson the freedom and licence to roam whilst having Bardsley and Alonso providing width could be just the spark we need

Nothing is so certain. (I keep hearing West Ham, I have a cousin in Forest Gate).

So are saying that, if there is an opportunity of a decent deal to sign a potentially quality player we should n't do it if he need time to adjust...

That's what we scout players for marra. It doesn't matter when we sign them... You have to remember we are competing in a competitive market where it's essential that we try to steal a march on other teams... Or we stand still...
if you have a player for 4 months and he needs 3 to adjust then of course you shouldnt do a deal, he is in no way shape or form any better than diakite. of all our glaring problems a back up defender wasnt what was needed.

I missed the game - just watched 10 mins on saf see but you can't glean much from that - how were we? Reading the board we were either good or shit so it's hard to tell.

Two things I did get from the highlights were that Manone should have done better with the first and Johnson's face when O'Shea missed said it all.

you realise its almost april and he leaves us in may dont you?

how is it in any way identical, face it we got a lemon end of.

O'Shea and Brown are our first choice for the rest of the season, but Vergini will no doubt do a job when it's required... It's already been documented that if we stay up, he will sign...

It's identical in the fact the Coco up the road was shit for the Barcelona of the North in his first season. All the mag mates I have slating him big style. In a kind of a kneejerk fashion like some of our supporters. Their defence is now much stronger when he plays, as he's adapted to the league and his qualities can show..

So just resign ourselves to the fact we're doomed? Nope, not just yet. Like I said, while there's hope, I'll stay as positive as possible.
I looked at the league table on Saturday and, at first glance, things might not be as bad as they seem. Then I dug a little deeper, forthcoming fixtures, recent form, goals for, goals against, opposition fixtures, and I think we really are doomed. There's always the chance of a miracle but time is running out. What team can stay up when they can't beat their rivals at home?

The other teams amongst us aren't beating anyone either.

How come they're not doomed?

If we stay up, he signs and turns out to be a Gem next season, I'll be very interested to read your posts...! maybe we could bump a few....

He made a few mistakes last night, agreed.
He looked a bit nervous last night, agreed.
Overall he did OK last night in a system that Gus adopted, which nullified Liverpool's goal threat... FACT!

It took a quality free kick and a canny decent deflection to beat us...!

I know, I did exactly the same thing. After our capitulation against Norwich, I feared we'd gone, but all the other results went our way. However, my real fear is our lack of threat up top. We are simply rank awful. I saw 'Boring' Stoke dismantle Villa Sunday, scoring 4 in the process and it sunk in how much trouble we are actually in. Norwich have a shocking run in ( admittedly ours is not too bright ), but your point re beating teams in and around us is the crux. We have the answer right there if the worst happens.
