Swimming with dolphins

Don't get it, its "critical" we learn about other animals so we can stick our noses into their existence when they've done and are doing fine without it?

Hell yeah, quite apart from animals like the manatee which would be probably extinct in florida without intervention and other places we act on the animals behalf (which is fine and what have you) we also help ourselves. We get anti hiv retrovirals from sea sponges, blood clotting agents from horseshoe crabs and a load of other stuff from poking around at shit. Studying how (captive) dolphins use sonar is ongoing to improve ultrasound machines to hopefully provide an inexpensive alternative to mri (oddly one of the main uses would be studying marine animals as getting them to hold still in an mri is apparently a bit of a fuck on)

Still not critical just handy,us poking around in general doesn't half cause problems

Dont mate, its a f***ing whitewash presented as journalistic fact. But its actually mostly bollocks and has been ripped to pieces by actual experts who don't have an axe to grind.

Which bits specifically, out of interest? Genuine question.

In places like seaworld and discovery cove i see it as a sacrifice like the orcas. Yeah its not ideal but they are well looked after and healthy
Wrong. Two deaths just in the last three weeks.

They are always smiling.

A dolphin's smile is nature's greatest deception.

Let's face it, the multimillion dollar operation that is SeaWorld constantly have their marketing and PR departments in overdrive trying to portray their organisation as the last bastion of welfare for orcas and dolphins. The reality is despicable. They wank off male orcas so they can impregnate females orcas to keep their supply of killer whale exhibits constant through new born calves. They starve their dolphins to get them to perform tricks for food (do you think the dolphins do jumps and flips in their tanks for the applause?) and it has been scientifically proven that most cetaceans live longer in the wild than in SeaWorld's tiny concrete prisons. You buy a SeaWorld ticket, you fund the cruelty. Simple as.

The keepers do look after them as best they can within the environment provided. Whether they should ever be in that environment in the first place is another argument.

Seaworld is no different to any other zoo except that it's marine animals. Do you think the cages that lions, tigers, gorillas etc are kept in provide a natural habitat.?

Until mankind stops destroying the wild places on the planet, zoos are a necessary evil to keep SOME species alive. The only way the planet will ever stand a chance to recover is if some plague wipes out most of humanity.
How many zoos have you been to where the lions do tricks for people before getting fed?

It was a long time so I can't recall exact bits - but the one general things was how they edited scenes to make it look like comments and documents about issue A were actually linked to issue B - basically lying.

The other was having people who had a clear bias / axe to grind being called "experts" and using their opinions as facts.

Love SeaWorld and love Discovery Cove. Would and will continue to visit as often as my wallet permits and will do so with a clear conscience. I wouldn't go to any tinpot, pikey Mexican type one.

I've paddled near a dolphin at Inishmore harbour... Was about 10 ft away from it. Gorgeous and a proper showoff.

Used to follow the ferries in, swim around in the harbour as everyone oooohed and awwwwed then bugger off back out to sea to wait for the next ferry
