Surname names...

Nope, the surname is from the father's first name.
Erik Jonsson could have a son called Erik Eriksson and a daughter called Gitte Eriksdottir
I know but now they just pass the surname down so it makes no sense.

Like Christian Erikson's sister is also called Erikson and she's a lass but I guess these days could be out she wants like. But really should be called Eriksdottir.

Their dads called Thonas though so they are Erik's kids unless their mar has been seeing the milkman.

I was once told the Brazilian player nicknames were similar, with Ronaldo meaning son of Ronald and Ronaldinho being grandson of Ronald. Not sure if it's true but I want it to be as my grandad was also called Ron. Be the only reason anyone would refer to me as Ronaldinho.

Why / When did this start to become a thing?

Clayton
Parker
Dawson
Wilson
Barratt
Archer
Barker
Cooper etc

Usually boys. At soft play this aft and its like conventional names no longer exist.
In thirty years time, at the soft play centre, all the kids will be called , Brian, Graham, Kenneth, Stephen and Derek (perhaps). Their Dad will complain about the loss of good old conventional names like Grayson, Taylor and Clayton.

I love seeing the fashion in names, the changes that come and go. The names that stand the test of time, and the names that "date" you as they were only popular for a short time.

It's only Iceland that do that. The rest of the Nordic countries do as we do.

Swedish lass who works for Maxim brewery (after whom they named their Swedish Blonde beer) is called Anna Gorandsdotter-Bell.

I suppose her Dad could have been Icelandic but living in Sweden when she was born.
