Super League - Saudi style

I hope it happens me. Send them all to the super league, mags included. They’ll be kicked out of the prem and it’ll be like the championship is now, competitive. It’ll be big for a couple years then no one will be interested in Real Madrid vs spurs in Jeddah for the 4th time in 2 seasons
They’ll come back and the FA will smash them with embargoes etc when they join.
Fuck em
The FA had the chance to that to Manu when they disgracefully decided they were not entering the FA cup. Fine! Don’t enter but for the next ten years you’re starting at the first prelim qualifying round or just not being allowed in at all.
The FA did fuck all.
Manu were welcomed in next season with open arms.

This was a pivotal moment indeed

If they fuck off, we could have a league that is not run for the benefit of the richest clubs.
The model at the moment doesn't work. You need to be owned by a country to be competitive.
The rest throw money at it in an unsustainable way to keep up.
It would essentially make the Premier League and top league like the Championship (at least initially) where you would probably not have all the top players there anymore but it would be a fun league, competitive and different teams would win it.

I couldn't give a fuck about having all the top players, essentially supporting a business instead of a football team and knowing at best you might scrape into some European C League if you take the risk on spending enough money your club could end up on administration.

This season was f***ing great, great football to watch, lots of ups and downs, club feels like it has a connection to the community again, I like the players and don't think of them as some overly paid wankers who are here to cash out.

It would be f***ing great to have that with an actual title on the line. We still wouldn't be guaranteed to win anything but at least we would have a chance to as would about another 50 clubs if the top 6/7 fucked right off.

After the takeover of golf by PIF… the next thing will surely be for the Saudis to form a Super League. Of course, the composition will include those that have already signed up and will include others (certain clubs with, let’s say, Saudi interest).

It isn’t a huge leap of imagination to see the likes of Real and Barcelona pushing even harder for this, given their financial situation. Moreover, what better way to introduce Saudi domestic teams into this Super League.

I will give estimate a timeframe of around 2 years. The money is just too much to turn a blind eye to. As depressing as that is, I think it is game over - and I don’t even think that a regulator will be able to prevent it. Not that I think the useless politicians could be good enough to do something sensible.

World Cup in Saudi will be a stick on in 2030 too.

What sport next… snooker, F1, tennis? That’s a wider discussion, but after yesterday, I think there has been a seismic shift in the landscape, and the rest is unstoppable. And I’m afraid for this poster, incredibly depressing for many reasons.
Whilst not being quite as pessimistic as yourself , I do agree that after yesterday , nothing can stop the Saudi sports washing bandwagon and we may as well get used to it them up the road , joining the elite clubs in football .

Don’t worry The Government, The FA,FIFA,EUFA and the Premier League will put a stop to it……. Oh wait.

There would be European football still as well just without the mega teams which would be fun... for a while. Then the money will be distributed to certain teams that always qualify and the system will create these massive teams within our own pyramid again unfortunately.

In a way I see this as increasing the chance of a backlash. All brings attention to what the likes of PIF are investing in. It's easy to ignore the purchase of real estate here or minority shareholding there (capitalism gonna capitalise) but when they look to lift and shift cultural institutions to serve a vision of the country that is 100% at odds with their oppressive ruling regime, there's a very good chance that this ends up falling over. Again, this is the hubris that is endemic in the rulers of this part of the world. Forgive the pun but it feels like it's all built on sand.

What if they just want out of the league cup, and replace that with super league fixtures.

that would totally devalue the league cup to the point that it would be worthless.. they'd more than likely remove the winners european spot and not only would the super league teams not play in it, the rest of the top two leagues would play their reserves - its not far off what is happening now - and it would become a gloried papa johns trophy, with the actaul papa johns trophy becoming even more worthless

that would push the FA cup to standing of the current league cup, as secondary priority that is only interesting in the final couple of rounds for most people, and league would become the testing ground for the super leagues youth and reserve teams

the media will of course try and big up each competition like they do now, and make it sound like the ultimate acheivement to win the FA cup or premier league under those circumstances, whilst every fan and player will know that winning either of those is barely a blip on the footballing landscape, as all the biggest and best players are in the super league

Luton getting into the premier league is more exciting to most people than man city winning it
This is a absolutely correct.

What you want as a supporter of a small, crap club - you recognise their small crapness, and love them all the more for being able to sometimes dish out some pain to teams they shouldn't be able to compete with - is that chance to dream.

Close the shop, lose the opportunity to dream, and it's just Manchester Human Rights Violators v Newcastle Murderers, and I won't be watching.

Barnsley can't even get into the second tier. But, although it'll never happen, the chance is there for us to become the best team in England, Europe, and the world. Close off that infinitesimal probability, and what's the point?

I already don't attend Papa John's matches, because my club is an independent one, trying to be as successful as it can in its own way. It's not an opponent for Manchester Human Rights Violators' foetuses to play against.

In the long term, some sort of Super League will happen. And, at the other end, the oil cheats, murderers, and sportswashers, will get their B teams into the lower divisions. At which point, I'll spend my season ticket money on ebooks, and that's that.

if they were totally removed, then yes.

but they won't be. it'll be us, west ham, everton, wolves etc.. battling it out against Man City's B team.

i don't buy this notion that they'll fuck off and leave the domestic league to the rest of us. they'll want a slice of every pie going. including the fa cup and league cup, they'll simply extend their squads to 100s of players to make sure the have just the right amount of talent and skill at every level to compete and clean up

How much fun will English football become once the greedy clubs all leave to eventually die on the alter of corporate greed.
All owners except for maybe Brighton, Brentford middlesbrough and fan owned clubs are doing it to either enhance their brands/nation's or make a profit and that includes Kld and Sunderland . He's not chucking money away out of the goodness of his own heart. Football is commercial . Football is greed . For owners of Brighton Brentford middlesbrough and fan owned clubs it's a passion.

Look at the NFL, MLB etc all closed shops and they have huge crowds and make money.

The IPL is a closed shop and makes fortunes
I was just forming a thought on this exact thing. Was thinking that Championship, L1 and L2 should go to a franchise model as a defense against them being corrupted by the money. If the higher ups want to eat their own tail let them.
Not sure how these thoughts rattling around my coconut would work or be implemented but our respective leagues are very strong here regarding money.

As i said further on, if the EFL keeps its powder dry and waits for the Big 6 and Premier League to bend over and accept the Super League, they would clean up the non Super League clubs with a revamped Pyramid and fairer financial distribution of TV money adn i honestly believe there would be enough interest to get a decent (but not obscene) TV deal, sensible kick off times that suit not only TV but also the match going fans adn advertising would still be there.

Its not like if the Big 6 left, clubs would suddenly stop having supporters

If the Big 6 leave the current pyramid goes pop overnight

And when the Saudis get their iron fist grip on world football they’ll then want to sell it to the most massive market in the world…America.
That’ll mean making it palatable to them. Bigger goals/4 qtrs instead of 2 halfs/countless TV ad stops/sin bins/100ft wide ads painted on the pitch/ no relegation or promotion.
Sounds far fetched? I dunno
