Super League - Saudi style

When it was mooted during lockdown there were near on riots from fans of the English clubs involved

I doubt the Man Utd and Liverpool fans who were dead against it will feel any different about this sort of prospect

They’re gonna do well to sportswash it out with the amount of anger that’ll come their way

I'm not doubting or denying that. I'm just saying it won't work for those clubs to remain part of domestic leagues.
Fully agree mate, it couldnt work and would be the straw that probably broke the camels back for an awful lot of clubs / people.

Trouble is the big 6 over here want everything their own way, they want all the money to themselves and by using scare tactics of how the money would go if they went, they continue to rule the roost
Ok I realise it. What now?
Embrace the World League, wave them off and enjoy the reset that would follow

I do tend to agree that it will happen, but it will be the beginning of the end if the EPL let them compete in both. I have absolutely no faith that they have the strength to stand up to the money that will be on offer.

its easy enough, they build a squad for the super league, and keep one for the premer league, they do have the money to do it. city already has a second 11, just have to make that a second 25 squad.
So man city reserves win the premiership, facup, league cup and the new version of the champions league... do they then get invited to join the super league with the Man City 1st team... where the hell does is stop?

Fair points I think…

This has been the most enjoyable thread for a while. Lots of interesting views. Gonna rumble on for years as well. Be interesting watching it all unfold.

Nah the Super League will be a closed shop. No relegation.

I doubt they will and agree that the EPL will move mountains to hang onto the coat tails.

However the EFL should see it as an opportunity to bring those not included in the "Keep all the Money to ourselves league" to bring them into a restructured pyramid system and leave the others hanging

I fully agree. But the name of the game is not competition or fairness. It is about the big clubs getting richer, and the PIF performing their sports washing.

After the takeover of golf by PIF… the next thing will surely be for the Saudis to form a Super League. Of course, the composition will include those that have already signed up and will include others (certain clubs with, let’s say, Saudi interest).

It isn’t a huge leap of imagination to see the likes of Real and Barcelona pushing even harder for this, given their financial situation. Moreover, what better way to introduce Saudi domestic teams into this Super League.

I will give estimate a timeframe of around 2 years. The money is just too much to turn a blind eye to. As depressing as that is, I think it is game over - and I don’t even think that a regulator will be able to prevent it. Not that I think the useless politicians could be good enough to do something sensible.

World Cup in Saudi will be a stick on in 2030 too.

What sport next… snooker, F1, tennis? That’s a wider discussion, but after yesterday, I think there has been a seismic shift in the landscape, and the rest is unstoppable. And I’m afraid for this poster, incredibly depressing for many reasons.

This was my thought when I seen the 3 golfing bodies line up for their golden handshake.

The world is bending over backwards for Saudi money.

They have maybe put a billion into golf. They would be looking at stumping up half of that per team and at least 16 teams. Huge money even for them.

So far in golf

They’re waiting on the valuation of this new entity and will put capital in based on the valuation

They’re ploughing billions into golf

They could easily put 10s of billions into football

Excellent idea. You should write to the EFL with that one.

Yeah… it sure is. I don’t know what the sporting landscape looks like (for all the sports I love)

This is what baffles me, there's no way they are getting anywhere near that figure back, the golfers who participate may love it, but how much does the rest of the world actually care?

Just seems like a huge vanity project done for the sake of saying "look what we can do" but without any even medium term benefit never mind post 2030 when they need to wean their economy off oil.

It gives them credibility in the west
