Super League - Saudi style

Whether people like it or not, calling for the big clubs to piss off to whichever newly formed league which offers them the most money will signal the end of football as we know it in this country. Yes they demand the most money and yes they appear to be treated preferentially, but English football needs the Man Utds, Liverpools and Arsenals. Frankly it’s ridiculous to pretend otherwise.
So what, if bending over for Saudi Arabia to do whatever they want is going to get football I'd rather not bother. As long as Sunderland put a team out to represent the club and the city against other like minded teams I'll be happy

Hope so. Take all the things I hate about modern football with them
Mcllroys take was interesting and refreshing -they are here to stay but we must dictate the terms ( re golf) ..

They might altar their mindset 😉

So what! We would be in a league that would exist without greed and one we might have a chance of winning. Let them bugger off to a super league and play amongst themselves every week, I say 😀. I go to watch Sunderland, me, not the opposition.
What will happen to the Champions of this "current/original" League ?
Will they get promoted to the new Super League ?
The members of the current/original League are going to want a piece of the massively wealthier Super League if they can.
As a Cardiff City fan I have no problem with the new Super League clubs buggering off to play wherever in the world.
But, the Premier League clubs excluded from it will be very envious and angry if there is no promotion.
Also, what would happen to the say 14 Premier League clubs left behind ?
Would the Top Clubs (it could include Spurs for example) look to form a second tier Super League with other like-minded and left behind, continental clubs ?
EUFA will be desperate to not let Saudi Arabia gain any influence from their clutches...

The i paper yesterday was saying as soon as they bid for the World Cup they’ll get it. Had about 4 pages about the Saudis. They seemed well informed, and seemed to think there’ll be a Saudi owned super league floated soon again, this time more calculated
They’ve bought the African and Asian votes and have Greece and Russias votes too from Europe. A concession to host the opening game in uraguay will push it over the line. Winter World Cup in Saudi is nailed on in 2030.

For the 100th anniversary? Mad that. Just host it in South America. Got to.

Without doubt

Appreciate that, initially.
But, after a few years of being top of the heap, those remaining clubs' owners (especially the American owners), will want more profit.
Where does that leave them as second-rate clubs (to the unreachable Super League teams), with much smaller TV rights etc ?
Football has some big decisions to make...

Seem to remember reading that there was Saudi money involved in the original Super League idea. No doubt that'll get revisited again after the golf merger this week.

They're funding the African Super League which begins this year, which will no doubt buy their votes for their 2030 World Cup bid.

Quite how they approach taking over the sport at the elite level is still up in the air I think. They have a number of options:

1) They build their own league by keep buying superstars and grow the league to the point where they're attracting elite players in their prime.
2) They make Newcastle a super power and have "non affiliated" Saudi backers make similar investments in other clubs across Europe.
3) They create an Asian Super League with incredible prize money on offer. Saudi, UAE, Qatari money all invested in bringing the best players to their continent might lift the whole area to be a competitor to Europe.
4) They create a competition akin to the Club World Cup and expand it, where they're hand picking 8 elite European teams, plus a handful of Saudi ones, the African Super League champions etc. and have a "Super Cup" rather than a Super League.

Whatever they do, they won't stop here. It's just starting in my opinion.

These clubs are great institutions of this country that are embedded in our history and the history of football.

Any solution needs to be to protect them like listed buildings, prevent them from playing in any other competitions and prohibit huge cultural changes without stakeholder permissions. Eventually, we need to find a way to get to a German style ownership, where fans have a 51% vote. This kind of restrictions to ownership might prevent our game being corrupted by those who want to exploit.

"Owners" should only ever be custodians when it comes to sport.

They are also farming future Saudi players by identifying youth talent in Africa and granting citizenship to the most promising players. Harvest time will be the 2030 World Cup.

It’s all very odd and quite too sinister I think.

They won't leave. This will be in addition to the domestic league
Hope if they want to leave, the FAs of each nation say fine but you go into this competition and you can’t play in your national one. Take your pick, fuck off or stay but you are not having both.

I for one don’t care if they do. Championship is the strongest out of all the leagues outside the top division and better to watch mostly. Premiership is fooked and the sky fan boys go on about it as if football didn’t exist before it. Does my sweed in.

Also say any players who take part can’t play for their country.

Wouldn't happen. The PL and other PL clubs will realise how much money they would lose in TV deals and sponsorship.
