Super League - Saudi style

No, they have to restructure according to income. Same as any business would.

What happens if the next PL TV deal is only half the value as TV companies decide its not worth it?

You wouldnt swap with Bournemouth now then? Id like us to be able to compete without needing a State to buy us and in a vaguely competitive league
We have got a much more competitive league than the rest of Europe . Man City may be bossing things now but we have at least 6 teams who will be able to mount a challenge next season . The money the top teams generate has allowed teams like Bournemouth, Brighton and dare I say even us , to be able to buy players we would never have been able to when our owners were local businessmen.

We will have to agree to disagree. The big boys will be off to a global super league in the next few years an i honestly believe it will be for the better off all clubs

that would totally devalue the league cup to the point that it would be worthless.. they'd more than likely remove the winners european spot and not only would the super league teams not play in it, the rest of the top two leagues would play their reserves - its not far off what is happening now - and it would become a gloried papa johns trophy, with the actaul papa johns trophy becoming even more worthless

that would push the FA cup to standing of the current league cup, as secondary priority that is only interesting in the final couple of rounds for most people, and league would become the testing ground for the super leagues youth and reserve teams

the media will of course try and big up each competition like they do now, and make it sound like the ultimate acheivement to win the FA cup or premier league under those circumstances, whilst every fan and player will know that winning either of those is barely a blip on the footballing landscape, as all the biggest and best players are in the super league
Yeah I've advocated the League Cup to not include teams in Europe (who can't really be bothered with it anyway), as everybody would rightly fancy their chances in it and maybe increase interest and gates instead of waiting for the big clubs to be knocked out before even thinking about it.
But you're right. Without those clubs it would be devalued and mean far less to win or even get the the final of, in effect a sort of Papa John's or old ZDS - it would be a cup for the also-rans to have some experiences in.

Never thought about that until I read your post.

Whether people like it or not, calling for the big clubs to piss off to whichever newly formed league which offers them the most money will signal the end of football as we know it in this country. Yes they demand the most money and yes they appear to be treated preferentially, but English football needs the Man Utds, Liverpools and Arsenals. Frankly it’s ridiculous to pretend otherwise.

Would be the END of Football for Sky boys only, everyone outside of EPL would carry on as not except for a few clubs that would need a reset for wages.

No it doesn't.

Jesus. You must work for sky.

Football existed before sky invented “the big 6”

I take your point but if it’s a flat choice between ‘the big 6’ being in a separate invite only cartel earning vast revenues and simultaneously participating in a domestic league with a supporting cast of also rans the pyramid would be better off without them.

A world club super series format played to the highest bidder at times to suit PPV audiences in god knows where would be utter shite. Make no mistake, the games will be played to whichever audience pays the most. Site fees or PPV. Boxing and F1 have led the way.

The Saudis will either force their teams into some type of expanded champions league format or create a breakaway worldwide club competition imo.

A world league of 30 or so teams in two divisions. As Long as they all fuck off from the domestic leagues who gives a shite. They can split from FIFA and start developing rules to be more spectator friendly - 4 quarters, bigger goals, rotating subs etc etc.

I’ve not read the whole thread. However, I can’t really see the appeal or clamour for for English clubs to join a “Super League” even with the money on offer I think there’d be a massive backlash from supporters in this country like last time.

The other issue is FIFA holding the licenses for players to represent their countries. I’ve no doubt that FIFA being the corrupt & greedy organisation they are would take money for a World Cup to be held in Saudi Arabia. However, I can’t see FIFA ever wanting to share all of their spoils with anyone else.

The threat and possibility of FIFA not allowing players to represent their countries if they played under a different organisation (outside of the respective nation’s FAs) is another massive hurdle for any perspective Super League.

Good points made. I don’t think they are insurmountable 💰

Another merger on the cards…à la PGA ? They could finally put their feud with UEFA to bed as well by blowing them out of the water. I wouldn’t put anything past them.

I wouldn’t either. Although, what I would say is we all know how corrupt and rigged the voting is for World Cups.

There are too many vested interests at FIFA, UEFA and other federations (also linked to corruption and geopolitical issues) that I can’t see even the Saudi’s paying that many people off!

Unfortunately, greed and corruption is rife at every level of the game now. Genuine football supporters and people in this country have already had enough of it, because it stinks!

I think that’s the biggest appeal and hope for me, that if the “big 6” or super / state owned clubs fuck off and the door is closed behind them we have a long overdue reset of the game in England.

Personally, I watch little to no PL or Champions League games these days (and spend all my disposable income following Sunlun) so it makes no odds to me if the big clubs do go.

Fantastic post ….

Sooner they fuck off the better.
The proviso being that they are banned from all national leagues and competitions. No clubs able to have various teams in different leagues around the world. When they go they go. They will not be able to return hence rotting away in some meaningless super league

Somehow the Saudi’s managed to circumvent the objections of the PL to a Newcastle takeover via a morally bankrupt PM.

It's bizarre what people's interpretation of sport is these days. The premise of competition is being allowed to dissolve in front of our eyes in favour of a fixed financial hierarchy ran by an autocratic state. They're effectively choosing winners by bank rolling them with state assets.... and there's no uproar?

Of course the main beneficiaries; the governing bodies, who we know are unstoppable juggernauts of greed, Infantino, for example, has been fluffing us up for this for years. "More football tournaments" (which no one asked for), more multinationalism, more outside investment - all designed to protect the revenue of the elite* clubs. Broadcasters
of course pretend to have a moral compass but are quick to distance themselves from any criticism to secure their seat on the gravy train. Meanwhile, the more feeble minded 'fans' are actually rolling out a red carpet for it!

It's grotesque.

(* - elite meaning bank balance, nothing to do with historical success or reputation)
