Super League - Saudi style

After the takeover of golf by PIF… the next thing will surely be for the Saudis to form a Super League. Of course, the composition will include those that have already signed up and will include others (certain clubs with, let’s say, Saudi interest).

It isn’t a huge leap of imagination to see the likes of Real and Barcelona pushing even harder for this, given their financial situation. Moreover, what better way to introduce Saudi domestic teams into this Super League.

I will give estimate a timeframe of around 2 years. The money is just too much to turn a blind eye to. As depressing as that is, I think it is game over - and I don’t even think that a regulator will be able to prevent it. Not that I think the useless politicians could be good enough to do something sensible.

World Cup in Saudi will be a stick on in 2030 too.

What sport next… snooker, F1, tennis? That’s a wider discussion, but after yesterday, I think there has been a seismic shift in the landscape, and the rest is unstoppable. And I’m afraid for this poster, incredibly depressing for many reasons.

Sooner they form a super league and fuck off out of the domestic league the better.

The Premier League is currently rather pointless and odious in the way its contested and will only worsen.

I've no interest in a global League between fans I'll almost never meet. I want to be champions of England amongst fans of various clubs I will see and meet and know. The super league is a vacuous future that will lack ties and meaning. They are welcome to it.

This huge money pit of vision 2030 plan is to move Saudi away from oil reliance, and encourage tourism etc.

Will paying Messi and the likes hundreds of millions per year really help tourism that much? The locals will have a great time but I can't see any significant return on investment.

"Soft power" will be the answer but having over the hill superstars playing for their internationally irrelevant local sides, who will become more irrelevant when Ronaldo and Co leave, and even potentially hosting a world cup won't improve tourism, and won't improve their image to the point where it becomes a serious destination .

2 years you say. Just read this week that AI might have launched virus to kill us off by then. Better enjoy this next season eh? 😉

True enough Gloucester… the newspapers are not pretty reading at all 🤣

Football is a totally different financial scale to golf. Not sure this will happen in Europe.

Perhaps an extended world league cup with Saudi teams involved?

Could be Keith… that’s not a bad call.

I tend to think that they will go all in for it. Money isn’t a concern for them, and in any case, the revenue will be astronomical
There isn't the time for them to compete in another League against the great teams of Europe and the Premier League.
I’d agree with that

They have maybe put a billion into golf. They would be looking at stumping up half of that per team and at least 16 teams. Huge money even for them.

This is what baffles me, there's no way they are getting anywhere near that figure back, the golfers who participate may love it, but how much does the rest of the world actually care?

Just seems like a huge vanity project done for the sake of saying "look what we can do" but without any even medium term benefit never mind post 2030 when they need to wean their economy off oil.

It's partly vanity but mostly it's just pure sports washing!
