Sunderland's running costs are 'scary' and must be reduced, says Stewart Donald

Why is the likes of the stadium and club shop being used as something that is a burden on the club now? Parts of the ground have been shut, but the ground is paid for isn't it? Having 20,000+ through the gate is a lot more than just about every team in that division. Surely all the offices come with those auto switches that go off when people are in the room. Stewards probably cost about £30 each per match and there'll be less of those. I just don't get it. Then the club shop is massive compared to cabins that other league one clubs have, it's a revenue stream for the club....again with staff on very (relative) small wages

What a pile of shite. Even by the standards of the shite on here that is honking. The new manager doesn't get back from his jollies until today or summit. Have we been linked to any experienced league one journeyman? Please remember that we only appointed the bloke on Friday, he's on holiday and it's been a Bank Holiday.

No, no we haven't. I'm talking about what I have heard in here, and what people seem to want. If what I'm saying is a pile of shite I'd hate what you are reading elsewhere is too. I'm merely repeating back what I have seen.

"Build a good core of experienced league one players"

Isn't at all a controversial observation to make from what has been said on here over the last few weeks. If anything the players he manager has been linked with don't fit that. I wasn't addressing him or the club, I was addressing the fans and posters on here.

The problem is that any costs which can easily be cut are absolutely dwarfed by ones we only have part control over.....ie player’s wages. In an ideal world we’d raise millions in fees and get the full wages off the books but as we saw last season they’re all tainted by the failure of their time here and unattractive propositions to better run clubs.

As an example there was an article about Ndong out yesterday saying there’s interest from 3 clubs in him....Cardiff, Lyon and an unamed club but apparently the fucker doesn’t want to return to France. We are going to be held to ransom by these fuckers and their agents all summer....it’s one thing saying we’ll be tough on them and their agents but ultimately they have signed contracts in their hands and can sit on them regardless of how it impacts us
This will be Rodwells legacy. Any player without concisence, morals, pride, honesty, or decency will do this now that it's been proven possible to get away with.

The parachute payments are going to amount to just under £50m. That is 100x what the rest of league 1 will get in TV money.

So the question remains. Are we actually getting all of that to spend on the club or is £40m of it effectively earmarked to pay (directly or indirectly) for the shares.

That is the elephant in the room finance wise at the moment.

My understanding of the announcement is that the latest parachute payment is security against Short agreeing to be paid in instalments. So long as we pay up, that money is available to the club. Whether there is some sort of restriction until it's all paid, and how long for, I don't know.

The manager prefers younger more dynamic players so god knows where you've got experienced journeymen from, haven't read it on here either.

Simply my own observations. It's largely just an opinion given what I have seen or heard, the majority of others haven't come to the same conclusion so we may be ok. The league 2 bit cane from the article

"Donald also says Sunderland’s cost-base is higher than the entire turnover of 20 teams in League Two"

I sincerely hope you are right. However a good look at the squad makes me shit myself tbh.

I hope you are right and that we can cut our way out of this. What is an acceptable timeline for you by the way?

See @Sid post above, the figures suggest the staffing levels are very bloated so something needs to be done

Timeline for promotion? Imo this season, go up at first attempt but we have to earn that right not just expect it

Yep, you're a WUM.

I have quite a lot. Hence why I said it. If it's not true and I just unluckily stumble upon those posts the only time they come up then great news.

 Can any sparks fit the don some cheap PIRs?

The Echo article refers to a "Director for Change" leaving (a six-figure salary, no doubt).
No wonder he's looking to cut out the dead wood!
f***ing mental! what the fuck is a director of change? How many lower level staff have been laid off to pay this fuckers salary? We’ve been as clueless as Peter Risdale at Leeds.

Fair enough if we have a load of people on hundreds of thousands of pounds just sitting around doing absolutely nothing by all means get rid. Fully in support of that. Surprises me that Bain wouldn't have thought of it with his slash and save approach mind. If, if these are not rich blokes hitting in their thumbs and creaming off the top, then we are going to see local lads and lasses hoyed out on the dole. Bain was crucified for this.

Discussing our fantastic stadium as a burden is also troubling to me.

We have a lot more non-playing staff working for the club than a lot of Premier League clubs have as has been stated. It's barmy to run a club on League One money irrespective of gate receipts like that, it's barmy to runs Championship club like that as well. Christ, it's pointless running a top flight club like that. Everything at the club needs to run efficiently instead of us spending money hand over fist on things we simply don't need

I've found @Grumpy Old Man 's post

If you compare our numbers of employees with PL clubs, we have more than most clubs outside the top 6. Our last accounts showed 293 non-playing staff; Newcastle have 127, Stoke 224, West Brom 89, Southampton 110. The better question is why do we have so many in the first place, and is one that Donald and Methven have probably asked.

Tbf he was being slaughtered on here for cutting costs.

His whole strategy was flawed. The loans, the lack of quality players, the fact that he didn’t get high earners salaries off the books when they were loaned out, the staff numbers were unsustainable and albeit very unpleasant he needed to reduce the staff further. He didn’t do his job properly......

It means we can actually take players from other academies which don't have that status, apparently.

Which ultimately is how we will achieve the self-sustainability that everyone is bleating on about. We can’t do it by cutting costs in any league below the PL as proven by the last set of accounts for all sub-PL clubs. We have to invest in players in the hope that we improve them and make money on them. Taking out of contract journeymen as many on here are suggesting won’t make us money in the long term.
