Sunderland's running costs are 'scary' and must be reduced, says Stewart Donald

I think we need to be doing everything we can to keep that women’s team, even at a lower level. It’s important and once it’s gone it will be incredibly different to bring back. What kind of message would it send to young women and girls if we basically say ‘sorry, I know your team has been far more successful than the men’s side in recent years but we’re going to scrap that to benefit the men’s team’.
The message it would send out is this is what happens when a club drops 2 divisions in 2 seasons & income drops by 98%. If the woman’s team costs the club financially it has to go otherwise there may be no club at all.

That might be right however getting rid of a groundsman on 18k is the tip of the iceberg
The whole article was about trying to get people to look past the obvious main cost of players and get people to realise that the whole club, every single aspect of it, seems to be costing too much money to run.

The main goal is getting the high contract players off the books. No one needs to remind anyone that we can't afford 40k a week salaries. The real fundamentals are that we are running the entire club as if we still have 100m TV money when we don't, we have a million or so from the league when the parachute payments run out and so we need to change the club to suit that sort of income.

There will be cut backs all over the place

It’s totally pointless other than as a source of good PR with ‘some’ people. At the moment we can’t afford £600k for that. Bin

Exactly I fear Donald will do his best to move these type players on, but he has no experience dealing with these spoilt millionaires

There just needs a willingness on both sides to reach a compromise. Just taking a tough stance could see us lumbered with them for another season but they and their agents need to be flexible also...i mean Ndong saying he doesn’t want to go to Lyon is f***ing ludicrous....he should be on the first flight out there talking to such a prestigious club.

I get that Marra but in reality it's the high end earners who will really make a difference and not some part-time low level staff

I’m going there tomorrow if I can be of any help

Well put unfortunately I can only give you one like

Exactly. Our main business is that of a men's professional football club. I've got nothing against women getting into football, it's obviously a positive, but they need to look at why it loses so much money. If a women's team was self sustaining then fine, but expecting the core business to carry losses like that for something that, frankly, very few care about, is ridiculous. I'd love to see a Sunderland women's team, completely unconnected to SAFC, form and become profitable and successful, at this stage however we don't need Donald feeling pressured into keeping something that simply can't stand on its own feet when our revenue is slowly being slashed as the parachute payments run out

But no clubs outside of the PL (and few in it tbf) break even....only those who trade successfully do so.

Surely the whole point of the “project” is that we AREN’T a L1 club and have only finished less than 3rd in the Championship once (last season) so running the club as a L1 club shouldn’t really be the aspiration of the new owners. Cut costs where they don’t impact on match day experience but ultimately we have to invest to get the club back challenging for a PL return....we won’t do that if we cut our cost base to L1 levels.

I’m going there tomorrow if I can be of any help

I’ll knock up a YouTube compilation of his best moments.....may need some artistic license there though...and you can drop it off when you’re passing.

Drip feeding information many are well aware of . Like the way they are putting our predicament into perspective. When one man is leeching 2m plus a year from Your accounts with no input it's fair to say that end dates are taken into account, more importantly not making the same repetitive mistakes than the previous oafs will go along way to addressing their goals.
It's certainly going to be interesting.

No it isn't. That's the harsh reality of it.

I'll give him the benefit of the doubt but if he isn't talking about players wages he is essentially talking about redundancies for local people, that is nothing to be celebrated. I worry that his head hasn't shifted fron an Eastleigh mentality.
