Sunderland's running costs are 'scary' and must be reduced, says Stewart Donald

The issue is say they need to be careful about is how to balance the spending they're going to have to do (bringing in New upper level people/players on decent money, stadium upgrades, etc) with cost cutting.

If someone on a meagre basic income is peddled while it's perceived one of their mates gets a cushy new job that won't go down well.

Tricky stuff to navigate, but they seem to know that already.

So far they only seem to have brought in Davison and Ross on less money than the people they replaced. That's a good start.

Yep. I don't envy them this task in particular. Going to be some real consequences for ordinary people who don't deserve them while the likes of Bain swan off with a small fortune for failing.

Disagree about needing continuity. We’ve been relegated for the second season in a row and have about 3 players in the squad worth keeping. I don’t want continuity of that I want clear decks to start again. Now is probably the best chance this club will ever have of breaking the cycle of shite we’ve came to accept and epitomise. We need a fresh start.
My thoughts are the same

We should keep McNair. Again, read Donald’s comments. This is about running costs without taking into account players salaries. Yes, a cash windfall for McNair will help boost the coffers but it isn’t going to reduce the overall day to day running costs of the club.

It would also be short sighted to sell him (unless the player was insisting on it). The better players we have, the easier it will be to instantly return to the championship and increase our turnover again (which will help overall running costs).
He won't be here. Agree, I would like to keep him but I am 100% certain we won't.
Kinda got himself nicely into the shop window at the back end so he won't be short of suitors

It’s been quite an eye opener over the last few days realising just how much of a mess things were in . Staggering to realise that we were paying people fortunes like this director of change and even now we still can’t work out exactly what she did !
I noticed that the director of marketing also went that day .

You say that but imagine this scenario

Injured while sunderland go down, twice in absolute freefall.
Come back from injury, do well.
In league one get made team captain stay fit, Sunderland storm the league
In championship Sunderland do well, mcnair, still team captain, even better. If Sunderland go up again increases his profile, if not thats the time to jump ship. He could be the player that turned it all around.

Its not an impossible situation and thats how id sell it to him. Just back yourself

My thoughts too. He's still relatively young so has plenty of time to make another move....the downside is his injury record. He might want to get that bigger move and contract
now just in case he gets another serious injury.

I think we need to be doing everything we can to keep that women’s team, even at a lower level. It’s important and once it’s gone it will be incredibly different to bring back. What kind of message would it send to young women and girls if we basically say ‘sorry, I know your team has been far more successful than the men’s side in recent years but we’re going to scrap that to benefit the men’s team’.

At what cost?

Then there's the "two negatives" scenario and everyone then says "we should have sold him"

Damned if you do and damned if you dont

Overnighting on away trips with all the players in their own rooms in 5* hotels won't come cheap. It's a lot of things that all add up. The costs are similar to PL clubs.

It wouldn’t surprise me if we have burnt through large sackfuls of cash for the following:

  • External legal fees, we have had some serious issues to deal with and may depend upon when those legal fees were billed;
  • Audit costs and financing advice when it came to us refinancing our debt;
  • Overseas flights for so called scouting trips and directors expenses;
  • External advisors;
  • Restructuring costs......

Agree with that, if it's linked to category one status and we're actually going to start trying to benefit from said status then yeah, that needs to be considered. If not though I don't think we should be supporting them unless they can become much less of a loss maker. 400k losses, maybe more even not in the top division just isn't sustainable when you consider how low our turnover might drop if we're still in league one when the parachute payments run out

Agree. If linked it will be important not just for long term revenue and talent development, but attracting players.

This is main problem, their wages are going to be a huge burden on the club.

If we can’t sell them, we should be able to loan out at least 4 of them, but god knows how they can resolve the Rodders problem.

Then you have the likes of Jones and Steale :cry:
Thought Jones contract was up at the end of the month?

So far they only seem to have brought in Davison and Ross on less money than the people they replaced. That's a good start.
Wait until these players are moved out for the younger eager ones they want to rebuild with at a fraction of the cost of O'Shea,Jones Oviedo etc. there will be some "for all I've done for this Club " comments, of that I'm sure.

seems like the premier league money and absent owner led to a perfect storm and bloated payroll

Donald has a massive task ahead

turn lights off when you leave the room and turn the heating down a degree, using both sides of copy paper and only filling the kettle with the amount of water you need for your brew are all a good start imo mate

I just bought a car that does 12mpg though - any tips?
