Sunderland's running costs are 'scary' and must be reduced, says Stewart Donald

If you look at womens sport generally you'll find it's attached to men's sports see tennis, athletics etc it's all part of the same ticket on the same day.

That's what I'd look to do of it was me, women can play on the same day as the men, reduce the price of a pint and make it the same ticket for the full day, I'd be willing to bet you'd get 1000 people who'd stay to watch the lasses if they came on after the men's team.

Cracking idea.

Not so sure tbh. Would depend on what can be cut from elsewhere too, as if what @prehab26 alluded to is the case, then the retention of category 1 status would be pretty important imo.

Agree with that, if it's linked to category one status and we're actually going to start trying to benefit from said status then yeah, that needs to be considered. If not though I don't think we should be supporting them unless they can become much less of a loss maker. 400k losses, maybe more even not in the top division just isn't sustainable when you consider how low our turnover might drop if we're still in league one when the parachute payments run out

Rodwell, Kone, cattermole, Ndong, dillydodgy, Khazri...6 players our club now can't afford or need...

This is main problem, their wages are going to be a huge burden on the club.

If we can’t sell them, we should be able to loan out at least 4 of them, but god knows how they can resolve the Rodders problem.

Then you have the likes of Jones and Steale

What loan repayments? There weren't. Any interest is shown separately in the accounts as well.

Thought the interest was only on the loan to short... the American bank had direct payments. May be wrong but those will have gone since due diligence was carried out

The rest we will have payments due in previous signings which we are still paying. Sure new owner states that the sky payments will cover these as will agreements in place for loan purchases.

Salaries are going to be the main thing

Kone
Rodwell
Cattermole
Ndong
Papy
Mcgeady
Oviedo

Need to go ASAP

You are missing the point

He isn’t talking about the players, but the running costs of the actual club before that

Ok then add to that all the directors salaries, ticket office running costs, CEO salary, ladies team costs, loss of income from concerts

The club was losing money from all directions

No - Short's loan was interest free. The interest was on the loan from SBC.

the numbers I was talking about aren't player wages, or anything to do with transfers. They're just the overheads - the non-wage costs of running the club. It specifically excludes all wage costs.

I know, that is what he is talking about, forget the players, he is on about everything else that goes into running Sunderland

just hope they don't go too far

I don't even think McGeady offers enough tbh. He'll be on big money for this league and I can't say I've ever been massively impressed by his work rate/ attitude. He'd win us points in league one mind but if we're getting a young, hungry side together (which hopefully we are), he wouldn't be a part of it for me. Anyone on good money that we keep has to be someone that we think can help us get up but also play a big role if and when we're back in the Championship. McGeady just didn't do enough for me to think he's that player, whereas (when fit) McNair did

I know his wages are high so will probably be peddled, regardless of if the manager fancies him or if he wants to stay. But with a younger side with legs in it I think he’d be a game changer. Barring McNair and Asoro we don’t have any. That might change with signings etc but I think keep him as long as we can and only get rid if we either replace him with better or get a offer to good to turn down.

Ultimately they need to go back to basics and build from there... lots more Jobs will be lost, black cats house will be rented out and ticket office moved into the stadium. We need to cut our costs to a minimum and rebuild as the club progresses. Hopefully we now have an owner who has a long term stable view and won’t cost us a fortune

They alluded to some unpopular decisions they will have to make in that podcast with RR and stated they'd come on to explain them. I imagine this is what he was getting at...

The fun stuff was nice for a few days, now the cuts are going to start. Terrible for anyone employed by the club in a non essential capacity and I wish them all the best if the worse happens.

In fairness to the new lot, they might be the ones swinging the axe but it was Short and Co who cost these people their jobs by dragging us down to a level where we can't afford them.

It will be interesting to see how they explain it, could be vital for club-supporter relations.

While most supporters can get a bit starry-eyed at times, deep down North East people tend to be pragmatists. I think there's a general recognition that things have to change. It'll probably help that Donald and Methven aren't perceived as having money coming out of their ears. With Short, people tended to see the word billion and see huge piles of £50 notes; that won't be the case with them.

The issue is say they need to be careful about is how to balance the spending they're going to have to do (bringing in New upper level people/players on decent money, stadium upgrades, etc) with cost cutting.

If someone on a meagre basic income is peddled while it's perceived one of their mates gets a cushy new job that won't go down well.

Tricky stuff to navigate, but they seem to know that already.
