Sunderland's running costs are 'scary' and must be reduced, says Stewart Donald

Most of the quotes/interviews linked on here, from the horses mouth, not conjecture.
They've stated we will have one of the best if not best transfer fund in the league.
They are going to focus on the academy and aggressively lure talent from lesser academies (not Cat1).
We have brought in a sought after manager who has bought into their vision, (he had other options remember).
They're binning bloated management and going to work hands on themselves rather than using the Bains of the world.

They have never said that, they said budget, completely different

Overnighting on away trips with all the players in their own rooms in 5* hotels won't come cheap. It's a lot of things that all add up. The costs are similar to PL clubs.
Add chartered flights to that

With a stadium capable of holding over 40,000 people that's only used every fortnight, they have to seek ways of making it pay with concers etc. Whatever way they can to rake in every penny. Car boot sale in the car park next? All joking aside every avenue must be explored, naming rights, advertising boards, sponsored scoreboard, using the land for Fayres, weddings, parties, i'm sure most of this is done already but they have to think of ways of using that stadium to it's maximum potential.

It would appear up to now our club as been run as lots of similar businesses are run with jobs for the boys.

That being those in senior positions and mercenary players just after a better or final payday. They have leeched from the club and were allowed to do so.

The odd thing for twats in all areas of business (upper echelon) who give themselves bonuses or massive pay rises there is always more chiefs than indians, without whom the business could not perform or meet targets.

They never get reflected pay rises and for loyalty normally get royally shafted. It would be nice yo get an owner who takes staff with him and creates a team from the bottom up once running a level of self sufficiency.

Hopefully Donald is that man and we come good for each othet. Ha way the Don, the Lads and us all.

But a few on here think we should keep McNair.

Get in the real World folks.
The lot has to go, no question about it.
It's really the only way of reducing costs.

We should keep McNair. Again, read Donald’s comments. This is about running costs without taking into account players salaries. Yes, a cash windfall for McNair will help boost the coffers but it isn’t going to reduce the overall day to day running costs of the club.

It would also be short sighted to sell him (unless the player was insisting on it). The better players we have, the easier it will be to instantly return to the championship and increase our turnover again (which will help overall running costs).

It's a tricky one, certainly we should be rejecting shit bids like £2m for him but every player will have a price. If we got £6m, plus his roughly £1m wages off the books, then I wouldn't complain. For that, if recruitment is right, we should be able to cherry pick about 3 good young players for this league who have the potential to do well in the league above as well. It's a tough one though because we know (if we can keep him fit) that McNair would be class in this division, and we do need some continuity. Just need to hope that they (including Ross when back from holiday) get most of these calls right!

It's not that tricky he will want to go

Disagree about needing continuity. We’ve been relegated for the second season in a row and have about 3 players in the squad worth keeping. I don’t want continuity of that I want clear decks to start again. Now is probably the best chance this club will ever have of breaking the cycle of shite we’ve came to accept and epitomise. We need a fresh start.

We need a lot of changes but I don't think an entirely new squad would be the easiest thing to manage. We've got a few players from last season who we should, if we can, be looking to keep. For me (although I think at least one will leave) they would be McNair, Honeyman, Gooch, and Asoro, with a couple of the other younger lads in and around the squad. If we could keep those 4 (again, unlikely I know) and build around them I think it would be easier than starting from scratch, don't think any of them are tainted by last season

You make some good points. Can we shift all our dross and high earners this summer?

One of which is McNair. If we plan on instant promotion and then being competitive in the Championship the following season then it’s no good whatsoever packing the squad with players who will simply do a good job in the third tier.

Agreed I’d keep hold of the young lads and have them in and around the first team, I was getting at more the senior players in the squad. McNair and at a push McGeady.

We need a new completely new defence which will need to be from scratch due to the numbers we’ll have left.

I hope we don’t go down the route of offering O’Shea a new deal. We need to move away from these players and now’s the time to cut them loose.

Agreed. McNair and McGeady are the only “senior” players I think are worth holding on to though. The others have proven not to be good enough to be competitive in the Championship over the last season so I don’t see the point in keeping them around.

We could tell him to stay but that would cause problems

It might do but that would depend on his attitude, not everyone is a Rodwell! He's probably on not far off £20k a week here so, financially, I doubt he'll get much more by moving to the prem. If we said we were investing and had a plan to go back up with him as captain and a key part of the future of card and asked him to give us one season you never know. He might tell us to fuck off and sulk, but equally he seems a good lad and if it's not going to massively impact him financially he might be happy to do it. Plus if he does well and proves he can get over his injury he'd probably be looked at by teams more established than Brighton. Not saying there a right or wrong way to go but that's why I think the McNair situation is a bit of a tricky one, don't want to lose a key player but don't want to turn down good money and end up in a Kone situation. Either way it's surely a non issue until we get a bid that's half worth considering!

If you look at womens sport generally you'll find it's attached to men's sports see tennis, athletics etc it's all part of the same ticket on the same day.

That's what I'd look to do of it was me, women can play on the same day as the men, reduce the price of a pint and make it the same ticket for the full day, I'd be willing to bet you'd get 1000 people who'd stay to watch the lasses if they came on after the men's team.

I actually love that idea.

Everyone saying we should ditch the lasses seems to have forgotten that this is a Football Club. In terms of community and spirit, ladies football has a great reach. And they're probably more cost efficient than other teams within the club.

I don't even think McGeady offers enough tbh. He'll be on big money for this league and I can't say I've ever been massively impressed by his work rate/ attitude. He'd win us points in league one mind but if we're getting a young, hungry side together (which hopefully we are), he wouldn't be a part of it for me. Anyone on good money that we keep has to be someone that we think can help us get up but also play a big role if and when we're back in the Championship. McGeady just didn't do enough for me to think he's that player, whereas (when fit) McNair did

I think the ladies team has to go. Alas you can just tell that if he makes that call there will be all sorts of criticism for him on social media. For me, at this level, we can't be carrying something that makes such a loss. If we get back to the prem it's definitely worth having but if it can't be self sustaining we simply shouldn't be spending that much on it in this league

Not so sure tbh. Would depend on what can be cut from elsewhere too, as if what @prehab26 alluded to is the case, then the retention of category 1 status would be pretty important imo.
