Sunderland's running costs are 'scary' and must be reduced, says Stewart Donald

No doubt about it. Even with the big changes at senior management level and cuts at the bottom of the pay scales, there is still a huge amount to work to be done to reduce staff costing. More tough decisions to come. However, so far the new owners have made tough decisions quickly and this must continue. The ladies team is an interesting one. 500-600k to run without a reputable league position now. That might go the journey. However, if it's needed to keep Cat 1 academy status that might be why they keep it. Again, tough decisions.

The Echo article refers to a "Director for Change" leaving (a six-figure salary, no doubt).
No wonder he's looking to cut out the dead wood!

Aye,no doubt a Bain created position otherwise known as jobs for mates to do some of the things he was meant to be doing, while doing a hatchet job on the low earning but actually contributing, staff. In some cases long serving. Just an educated guess like.

I think the ladies team has to go. Alas you can just tell that if he makes that call there will be all sorts of criticism for him on social media. For me, at this level, we can't be carrying something that makes such a loss. If we get back to the prem it's definitely worth having but if it can't be self sustaining we simply shouldn't be spending that much on it in this league

Ive no idea about business so what will the costs be?

I reckon something like:

Player wages way higher than performances warrant and the level playing at.
Overpaid and negative contributions from corporate staff?
Recruitment horrendous yet well paying for some incompetents?
Still paying transfer fees for non contributing and even already gone players?
Hopefully the sacked managers have all been paid up-probably have as most have been re employed elsewhere.

Obviously a small part has been addressed last week.

By that I assume you’re referring to Rodwell if so read the article again, Donald is talking about the cost of running the club excluding the footballers

Removing Rodwell will help the overall club finances but not the non football overheads

Not to mention improving squad morale, and getting a massive thumbs up from the vast majority of the supporters!
Should/needs to be a priority!

The problem is that any costs which can easily be cut are absolutely dwarfed by ones we only have part control over.....ie player’s wages. In an ideal world we’d raise millions in fees and get the full wages off the books but as we saw last season they’re all tainted by the failure of their time here and unattractive propositions to better run clubs.

As an example there was an article about Ndong out yesterday saying there’s interest from 3 clubs in him....Cardiff, Lyon and an unamed club but apparently the fucker doesn’t want to return to France. We are going to be held to ransom by these fuckers and their agents all summer....it’s one thing saying we’ll be tough on them and their agents but ultimately they have signed contracts in their hands and can sit on them regardless of how it impacts us
