Not at all if he was that good he would be playing in his strongest position and he certainly wouldn’t struggle to dislodge gavin McCann

Struggled that badly to dislodge McCann that he started eight more games than him in 99/00 and was subbed four times fewer.

Schwarz was absolutely vital for that side. He added tenacity, calmness and sheer quality to our left side which allowed Michael Gray to play his best season of top flight football for us. When Kilbane was signed, Schwarz moved into his more favoured position and was comfortably our best midfielder.

I’d be inclined to agree with you about Eric Roy to an extent as I think he is remembered more fondly overall than is appropriate because of the Chelsea game. But Schwarz was as good a midfielder as Sunderland have had in living memory

Schwarz was the best I’ve seen..for comedy effect I’ll say Carsten Fredgaard who was dubbed the new Brian Laudrup when he arrived..Baki Mercimek was the new Jaap Stam as well..both were utter shite.
Carsten Fredgaard the new Brian Laudrup? You'd never see that comparison by a Danish expert. He was good at national leve, clearly above league average, but in no way comparable to Brian Laudrup

In the first half of the season Mvila was as good as anyone we’ve had then his form dropped off a cliff
Steed was a superbly gifted player but actually had very little end result
Marangoni was a class player but on a totally different wavelength to everyone else he played with hence played good balls into areas where no-one was attacking
Sorensson was consistently steady without being outstanding

All told we’ve had a lot of nearly but not quite’s

Marangoni by a tetty field, saw things that neebody else did,Baxter, the few times he was on top of his game he was brilliant

All depends on what your understanding of "best" is...
Best for the club
Best technique
Best flair
Best for goalscoring
Best for overall ability
Etc etc

Everyone looks at what "best" is differently.

For me, Arca is probably best because he brought overall ability to the team but also bought into the area so much that he's stayed here long after moving on from Sunderland.
Schwarz is a close second. Overall ability to the moon (pun partially intended) and bought into the area but moved on.

No difference. Sess is the best player i've seen but due to inconsistency he's not the best non british player we've had thats Schwarz. Julio's my favourite because hes geet canny
