Struggled that badly to dislodge McCann that he started eight more games than him in 99/00 and was subbed four times fewer.
Schwarz was absolutely vital for that side. He added tenacity, calmness and sheer quality to our left side which allowed Michael Gray to play his best season of top flight football for us. When Kilbane was signed, Schwarz moved into his more favoured position and was comfortably our best midfielder.
I’d be inclined to agree with you about Eric Roy to an extent as I think he is remembered more fondly overall than is appropriate because of the Chelsea game. But Schwarz was as good a midfielder as Sunderland have had in living memory
