Game is this Wed starting at 12 according to twitter.

Is this a long standing fixture? I seem to recall these happening years ago. If so, why does it occur? Why Sunderland and not any of a hundred other clubs in the region?

I'm sure someone can explain it better than me but basically it's this,
The MCC side is made up of mostly local players who are trying to become MCC playing members by way of playing a number of games and performing well by taking wickets or scoring runs. The games are organised by one of the MCC members up here and the hosting club have to pay for everything, welcome coffee, lunch, tea, after match snacks and even the balls used in the game if I've got it right. There's no toss up either, the MCC always bat first and for as long as they want.

Things might have changed in the last few years, but I think that's the way it used to be, I'd be interested to know exactly how much if anything is different now.

Cheers @Harry Lime . May have a dodge up. However they can fuck off if they're charging on the door

Nice to see snobbery at Ashbrooke lives on. Cucumber sandwiches for tea or am a wrang?

I was at the Academy game today for a while until it rained and the only one of the Sunderland side I recognised was Usman Arshad, it looked a completely different side to the one they had last season. I got the impression that there's not so much money available as there has been in the past.

They bat first unless tiger brown is skippering
My lad has played in a couple of these games , good days , the mcc often ask a local international pro to help out. Some interesting players on show , once saw a Pakistani bloke who bowled right arm off spin and slow left arm with variations on each . Mcc used to have an old wicket keeper called tommy who used to come every year and must have been 65 if he was a day

Yeh,getting on for 20 years. I was referring to social membership more than on the playing side.

At junior levels , ashbrooke was always full of hooray henrys back in day. Lots of private school lads as I recall. Daresay different today. You make a good point on the membership

saw a pakistan 11 v windies 11, 50 over game at ashbrooke, years back. iirc jimy adams captained windies. game ended as a tie

Anyone can go there these days, you dont have to be a member to drink in bar, but if you are you get a certain % off drinks.

@Slandcricket: CENTURY!! For Simon Guy, he's faced just 62 balls and hit 13x4s and 1x6 #outstanding
