Sunderland v Gillingham 1987

I was there that day. 1500 is a ludicrous claim. There was probably around 2-300 based in the Paddocks, and a few more in the corner of the Roker (nor sure about the last bit, seem to remember some Skunk with a flag, but my mind might be playing tricks on me). It certainly contributed to the poisonous rivalry that exists nowadays.....don't think it was as bad before then.

Not a great day to be a Sunderland fan to put it mildly but at least the Skunks monetary contribution that day helped our promotion push the following season.:)

my dar says there was a mag about a third the way up the flood light waving a black and white shirt round his heed.

Was it fuck 1500. 200 at the very very most. Coppers hearded them into clockstand paddocks corner next to the roker end. They had about 5 yards of terracing.

1500 would have been half of the paddock FFS

This is correct

biele, is this hearsay or did you see them? I don't remember this at all....I was at the back of the Roker mind, and remember cheering from the gills but nothing from the clock paddock.

Remember it vividly mate, I was shocked at Seaburn station. I remember the mags and Gillingham fans lauding it up together at us.

I was in the Mainstand paddock Roker side. They were opposite me in the clockstand paddock, not that many but they were definitely there unfortunately.

Yep I remember this too - I was probably so raging thats why I can still remember it now.

What happened after the game, was there a lot of bother, or did the Police ensure that the Skunks were held well back after the final whistle?

i was in the roker end that day right next to the gillingham fans, remember mags giving it the big one waving toon shirts, they were given there own section in the clock stand paddocks,i would say no more than 100 of them.

I can't remember any bother personally, or whether they were kept in, I just made my depressing way home. I do remember bumping into a mag I knew on the metro home so he must have left at the same time, no idea which end he was in like.

thought it was us who were obsessed

I'm sure there would have been more than a few SAFC fans who would have done the same if the roles were reversed. Not condoning it, just seems that's how it is. It certainly did take the rivalry and hatred to new levels which I am sure did not exist before.

and a few years later we were knocking their sorry arses out of another play off semi final, happy happy days. G force 0-2, take that you smelly tramps.

I reckon 150 in the clockstand where the police put them. And they were escorted out. I was furious. Scum who should not have been at a match given protection

Surely you can't criticise the police for preventing major bother?

Got talking to Mag at work about it the other day, really placid bloke who supports them and dislikes us which is fair enough. He reckons there was quite a few neutrals in the Gillingham corner e.g. Carlisle fans. Police shifted them out to the Clock Stand when they got wind of them though.

Fuck me it's thousands of cumbrians and i assume darlo boro leeds and monkey. Hangers. Gillingham only had a mini bus on that day

Basically as some have already stated there was about 200 max and they were in the away corner. Sometime during the game, I can,t remember which half but the mags were escorted out the roker and put in the empty section of the clock stand paddock.

After the game there was a few mags found out that were outside the Fulwell and they got a beating, no idea what happened to the mags in the paddock.

There was actually only 1000 Sunderland fans at that game the rest of the crowd was made up from followers of all the above

Bloody nightmare of a day that was...I was in the Fulwell and the sight of grown men having a look of complete disbelief still haunts me. Even worse than the playoff final

Cannot remember any Mags being there and frankly I don't give a flying fuck I.ve worked with loads of the twats who have claimed this that and other and they don't even know where Sid James's is FFS never mind crawling out of their holes and making the journey to Roker
