Sunderland railway station

Bit of a stupid question tbh, but there's a serious lack of independent and specialist shops, online shopping, too many people on benefits and low wages coupled with the fact that anyone with money buggers off to Newcastle or the Metro Centre has all taken it's toll. Sunderland needs a game changing attraction & infrastructure to draw people back in.

A decent football team would be a good start in attracting more people to the city.

Redevelopment is well overdue as Sunderland must have the most embarrassing railway station of any city in the country.

However given the costs of other station rebuilds, £26m doesn't sound much
Sunderland For Transparency reckon all the money is coming from Government. Not sure if this is true or not. Not that i'm arsed. About timw we had our share out of the pot.

Preferred these designs tbh: Sunderland Rail Station - Sadler Brown

I'm not overly keen on the roof, it reminds me a lot of Crowtree leisure centre. That said, I'll take this over another decade of the existing dump. Hopefully the new northern entrance will be a bit more of a statement structure if that is to be the main entrance.

Absolutely. I knew the roof reminded me of something.

That design you shared looks class and would therefore never happen.

The one in development looks to just be the cheapest half decent option.

They’re talking shite as usual, £16m from central government, the other £10m from the council, nexus and network rail.

Sunderland For Transparency or whatever they are called now are thick as mince - they put out a post claiming election fraud/corruption during the recent elections because some Labour candidates were standing on a Labour and Co-operative Party ticket (the Co-operative Party are affiliated to the Labour Party) and it's not allowed. The Liberal Democrats stood as
Liberal Democrat Focus Team.

The Labour and Co-operative Party ticket is registered with the Electoral Commission and is nearly 100 years old and they've just noticed it!

Apart from that a lot of money which we send in our taxes to Whitehall used to be returned as grants for the council to spend as they were the boots on the ground but since Cameron & Osborne's mean and spiteful austerity which plunged the UK into an even deeper depression, Sunderland have lost hundreds of millions of pounds and have to bid for funds - funds which a lot of the time to Tory marginals and the affluent south. So locally the Tories claim credit for the new bridge, Backhouse Park planting, the Fire-station, trains station etc but then blame the council for the city centre shops which are privately owned by e.g. hedge funds owned by your JRM's of the world.

Sorry not impressed - the one from a couple of years back looked fantastic, I knew it was too good to be true. I've seen a lot of these generic sheds down south, looks a bit like a Tesco Heper store. Better than what we've got but a missed opportunity.

Interesting take on the station investment by the ryhope conservative representative:

Fuckin hell that comment section is awful, all of them just egging each other on posting random lies and rubbish opinions on the state of the city centre. They clearly never go into the place otherwise they would see alot of investment and improvements from old buildings being brought back into use, new independent shops and bars etc etc, the Vaux site now isn't a desolate waste ground anymore. The council seem to actually have a plan and it's being put into place at last.

Agreed, what they don’t appreciate is that in some where like Newcastle the city isn’t as reliant upon the Council as there is a market unlike in Sunderland, therefore private investment is going into Newcastle. Newcastle council don’t own large swathes of property or goes out of its way to attract all of these retailers or Food & Beverage they come due to the footfall in the City.

regarding the station the comments are mad as the building is being managed and designed by Network Rail not the council. The Conservatives I think have been in power for the majority of the past 50 years and probably more so in the latter years of the buildings life or when lobbying for works to the building we being made.

somebody asked who is actually responsible for the upkeep of the railway station.

instead of answering he told the person to email him and he'll message him straight back. he could have written his reply quicker but that means people would see 😄

I seen that, ha.

Trouble is these people don’t want the actual truth and prefer to just get angry . It’s been a massive job to get network rail to actually do something about the station as it’s not busy enough for them to care .

Loads of interesting things happening in Sunderland and a few great local shops have appeared. Little shop do great business near the empire and mackies corner looks to be doing well,

We have started from a very low point but hopefully finally things are moving in the right direction
