Sunderland People

I need to get out more, really?

I used to do 50,000 miles a year, been all over the UK and Sunderland is a shithole on a par with Warrington.

Here in the NW Warrington isn’t perceived as a shithole at all. I ve worked there and it’s a step up from Blackburn , Burnley ,Oldham etc.

Preston does ok as it’s got the M6 and West Coast Main line. Beyond the city to the north is very affluent as is Ribble Valley and to the south is South Ribble which is tidy Preston suburbia.

Football rivalry aside , worst of the worst is Blackpool - it’s dying on its arse . But again come east into The Fylde and is quite upmarket.

Wrong again, I meant safc and nufc ain't rivals anymore ffs leagues apart, we will just leave it now eh, you seem a bit thick tbh

Just dropped yourself in it there mind mag.
Not the cleverest are you? And obsessed about Sunderland. And living in cesspit Shiremoor. What a sad existance.

This is the thing, the quality of the city is only predicated on people’s experience of the city centre’s. A lot of these places have nice places to live but the reason the towns and cities have declined is due to demise of manufacturing basis in the main and the centralisation of retail and leisure due to people’s mobility.

Sadly people from these towns are happy to travel to the regional centres for these experiences but those in the city are much less likely to go to these peripheral towns and cities.

People could learn to be a bit more positive that’s for sure. All people seem to do is moan when anything new comes along. It has been deprived over the years so maybe it is time for a change of attitude.

There is a body of people who are cynical and do us down, they tend not to see any positvety at all. This perception that we’re a downtrodden backwater, you would think there was no one in Sunderland doing well and living very contented and happy lives.
We live in a beautiful part of the country, there are many who have a good quality of life up here.

If its that bad, what does that then make the place you live (Shiremoor) ?

f***ing shitey Shiremoor

Attitudes won't change out of blind faith in fact the amount of times wev'e had stuff taken away (Leisure Centre, Town Hall) or given false hope (scale models and plans anyone) perpetuates those attitudes.
Also what the fuck is it that has stopped us from creating enough economic infrastructure to fully sustain a thriving city? That's what we should all be asking.

Nail on the head.

South unfortunately. I'm registered to vote in two constituencies and will probably use the Portsmouth one to hopefully help keep Morgan in. Nice lad and a genuine football fan unlike those politicians that jump on it for a few votes.
Yeah, have some mutual friends with Morgan, seems like a good guy, fingers crossed students going home doesnt hurt him too much!

Why should it be down to other for the towns prosperity? Why can’t the people of the town take some ownership and pull/push it forwards?
If you carry on waiting for others ( who seem to not give a toss) to move it in the right direction then you could be waiting an awful long time.
Some individuals seem to helping in small amounts in the city centre but other than Hayes Travel the bigger feel good stories seem quite scarce.

How Preston – the UK’s “most improved city” – became a success story for Corbynomics

And that’s the sign on a successful city where the council does not need to interfere. In fact in those cities where their is competition from the private sector the local authorities tend to get in the way. Sadly for cities like Sunderland the local authority has to step in due to market conditions or risk for developers.

The council isn’t in a healthy position itself. Putting all your eggs in one basket is fraught with danger especially when that basket isn’t strong enough.
There’s a national uncertainty at the moment but it’s been going on like that up there for generations.
We have a bit of a dip down here too but building in the towns and villages has never been so busy. We seem to be building ourselves out of the recession and unemployment is very very low because of it.
We must be one of the only counties outside London area that has a growing population.

Exactly local councils have been butchered with cuts by this Tory government a lot of jobs have been lost at Sunderland city council.

I totally agree that the council can not be totally responsible and it needs to somehow change the market conditions of the city or provide confidence to the private sector that the mark will change. They’ve tried to rely on the private sector through Siglion in the deal with Carillion and Igloo but that hasn’t really worked to date although they could argue that they didn’t get beyond the completion of the first building on Vaux. At Seaburn Siglion were hampered by the locals desire for more leisure development over housing.

What are they building?

What are they building?
Houses mainly but with those are industrial areas.
Our geography is different to up there as we have lots of villages and our main urban areas are nowhere near the size of up there but most villages have had recently had new houses and places like St Austell ( our biggest town) has nearly doubled its size.
Now, I don’t think there’s been nearly enough infrastructure ( schools, surgeries, hospitals) but people need feeding and entertainment and there’s very little unemployment so something is going in the right direction.
The farmers struggling with prices ( National problem) but there’s lots of work still in agriculture, fisheries and logistics.
