Being only born in 89 and watching football since 96 I have only heard of most of the legends and never seen them play. The only legends I've watched were Phillips and Quinn(more off-field than on), with arguments for Ball and possibly Arca

Throw in the names of Carter, Monty, Hurley, Rowell, Porterfield, Kerr...but what would be the ultimate Sunderland XI post WWII?

Jimmy Montgomery - It was a bit of a decision between Monty and Tommy S, both fantastic keepers in their own right although it's difficult to compare as football changed between 59-77 when Monty played for us and 98-03 when Tommy did well for us. Although Tommy was involved in what was probably the clubs best era and saved the son of satans penalty at the Landfill, Monty practically won the Cup for us in 73 with THAT save and many others over the years. The fact that Monty did it over a longer period of time for us makes me lean in his direction.

Chris Makin - A tough tackling, no nonsense type defender who loved nothing more than giving clattering some left winger. Always give 110% for SAFC and although he wasn't the greatest player in the world he was appreciated by me and many others for his style of play.

Charlie Hurley - The King. A classy centre half who was voted the clubs player of the century and those who saw him could see why. Over 12 years, over 350 appearances and more goals put together than Daryl Murphy, Jon Stead and Andy Cole in a red and white shirt. A true gentleman and still loves the club. One of the best headers of the ball I've ever seen.

Gary Bennet - Despite not being from the area, Bennet has grown to love Sunderland, signing from Cardiff, a minority were unsure on Gary but as 11 years passed, he became a cult hero and will be remembered for being a solid if unspectacular centre half who never took any shit. Probably best remembered for booting David Speedie into the clock stand and looking like he was going to kill the racist, jock twat

Len Ashurst - A solid fullback who was a football favourite, Lennie the Lion played over 409 games for SAFC and is fondly remembered in the NE for being a fierce full back who returned to guide us to Milk Cup Final in the mid 80's

Billy Hughes - Most notable for taking the corner kick that led to Ian Porterfield scoring the winning goal in 1973 FA Cup Final but Billy was a hard working midfielder who could also play up front and had an eye for goal. Highly regarded by SAFC supporters and Don Revie even expressed an interest in him after the 73 cup final.

Kevin Ball - The Hatchet. Not the greatest player ever to grace Roker or Wearside but he'd run through a brick wall for SAFC. One of the more commited players for Sunderland during a period that was tough for the club 90-97. Captain.

Gary Rowell - Although more commonly noted as a centre forward, Rowell is included here in an attacking midfielder role which suited him whilst playing for Sunderland as he often dropped deep. Many will know him for the hattrick and in his own words "taking the piss" out of the Mags but seemingly forget that Rowell was a hard worker who supported the club as a young boy and wore his heart on his sleeve. One of the best strikers of the ball the club has ever seen. Had to be involved in a Sunderland Legends XI simply for the game at the Landfill.

Martin Smith - AKA The Son of Pele. A genious with the ball at his feet. One of the most technically gifted players to play for Sunderland. I remember reading once, he was playing against the Mags in the era of 2-1 and he was on the losing side against the Filth. When the dirty scum bags tried to wind him up by asking him what the score was, he used his fingers to salute 2-1. Cue bedlam in the Gallowgate. Legend.

Niall Quinn - You don't need me to explain why Niall Quinn should be in every single Sunderland Legend XI. 2-1, rescued us from the depths of the 2nd division and has taken us to being on the verge of being a Premier Leauge powerhouse.

Kevin Phillips - 208 games and 114 goals. Mag Destroyer. Legend.

Montgomery, Malone, Guthrie, Horswill, Watson, Pitt, Kerr, Hughes Halom, Porterfield, Tueart.

Subs Sorensen, Gray (M), Todd, Quinn, Phillips, Bennett, Bent.
