Sunderland head coach

Managers/head coaches find it extremely difficult to accept losing even if there’s a ‘bigger picture’.

There’s always going to be disagreements, particularly during periods of poor form, and they isn’t exclusive to this club. Nature of the beast.

Open question: Does anyone know what 'the model' is? I don't. I think it's based on Moneyball-style sabermetrics: in simple terms, benchmarking young players, identifying & buying those who are undervalued, selling those who are overvalued. But I don't know.

Is it a piece of software or a philosophy or both, or neither? If it's software, then maybe it needs tweaking a bit? If it's an idea, perhaps that idea doesn't exclude seeking a better balance in the squad by allowing for certain gaps in experience levels & leadership qualities to be bridged?

I know nothing about computers, data science, AI etc. but I suspect that qualities such as leadership, guile & nous (arguably qualities in short supply right now) would not be easily written into computer programs. That said, I'm usually wrong about pretty much everything.

However, I do think that any analytical software or guiding philosophy should be there as an aid, a tool to be put to good use but not to be slavishly obeyed at all times & at all costs. There must, in my view, always be an overriding discretion to be exercised, sparingly, when needed. When to make such a judgement call is a matter for KLD &/or Speakman. Perhaps that time has come?

Speaking of which, the time has certainly come when we must surely appoint the best person for the job. Step forward, Steve 'Mr Universe' Evans....

Warnock would take it if offered imo and is possibly better tactically that Tony. I think the young uns would respect him too if im honest ( they should do given his record )
I'd agree on both counts & he'd get more out of the players than TM ever could. He'd scare a few as well; some of them need a kick up the arse as there is little effort on display.

It used to be footy manager in Reidy's day.

It’s just great to say the names and imagine what life would be like under them

Carteron - Roy - Henry - Sablé

That and the Rothmans Football Annuals.

On Premier Passions Reidy has about every copy going back to the 70s on his office shelf in the background in one of the interviews.

no!
Bin the model it’s f***ing shit
its never worked anywhere consistently!as if your doing well the pressures to break it to maintain position is too great ...if you ignore footballing pressure and apply the model rigidly it will make financial sense it will however mean you ignore the football!

We will appoint a head coach, dynamic and technical. Not Warnock the half man half dinosaur old school manager closer to the end of his life.

I think the experience of Neil and Mowbray will put off a lot of the ‘usual suspects’.

I’d be staggered if the next man is British.
Both Neil and Tony Mowbray were out of work when they were appointed. Neil walked out for more money and TM (love the man ) will have his contract fully honoured.
