No...no, I think you're wrong

2 aspirin and a lie down for you young man

Youre blind then. Councillors handpicked by tyneside, with geordie roots, funding has been splashed to tyneside for decades and tyne & wear was created for little more than sunderland taxes being spent on tyneside. We got....? Fuck all.

onbelievably correct pie chucker, the liberals have transformed newcastle and durham...the bastard labour have pandered to the unemployed promising them more benefits if they vote red.....i wish a dubai sheik would just invest in Sunlun and make it like Las Vegas

Aye, totally agree Sunderland Council are absolutely gash. Had dealings with a few of the councillors and they are all in it for themselves, or use comments such as 'it's against my socialist beliefs' when you try to do business with them.

But listening to them it's not their fault, it's the Tory led government.

People should start voting with their heads instead of who they have always voted for. There's a few independents and Tory candidates got close last time.

Few more votes their way and things may change.

Is that right about this Florance Anderson woman?

Why the fuck wasn't a bigger deal made of that and how is she still in a job?

god the more I read of this the more I am disillusioned living here....the only benefit being decent house prices.....people vote labout cos they associate tories with middle class and the enemy, what they don't realise is that it's the Labour who are milking them and play the working class card.......god, before long they will bar this bloody thread........start a campaign, liberals in.....i mean, you could knock down the leisuer cente, food giant and have the vaux and build some right funky shit there, but no , it just stands.....

vaux knocked down 11/12 years ago, in its place weeds.
newcastle brewery knocked down about 30 months, new modern buildings in its place, the one closest to the road is finished and looks great.

drive past it twice a day and if annoys the fuck out of me.

to many people are either to thick to vote or its me dad voted labour, me grandad voted labour, so i vote labour

If AV gets the nod, could would it be used in council elections? May be the only way of getting Labour out as nothing under the current system will!

And where do you suggest the Council suddenly find this "fortune" you speak of?

Magic beans perhaps?

Or shouldn't private investment pay for such developments rather than everyone's council tax getting hiked up to pay for it?

They could try using some of the near £90 million they have stashed in the bank.
That's right, £90 million.

They don't have to lose a single job, make a single cut and would still have £30 million over to invest in a major project, and that's for the next 3 years,IE: the whole length of the governments austerity drive.

My mate has been de-selected by the party as not a fit person to be a councillor, he'll piss it if he stands as an independent but as he said to me all he'd be then is a voice in the f***ing wilderness.
Party politics eh.

Is your mate Denny?

Didn't you read what someone else posted about them all being dyed in the wool black and white fuckers picked by a Tyneside council, you are an absolute clown, spent too much time writing computer software no doubt that has no bearing whatsoever with the living of real life and being able to spot a rabbit away, like why did Sunderland council put money into Dalton park shopping centre when it's own shopping centre is dying on it's arse, explain that one away smartarse, just because you might have worked for the tax office doesn't mean you know everything, in fact you know fuck all, denying the country is in £4.8 trillion in debt, and accusing the Times newspaper of sensationalizing things, the same newspaper that has the Financial Times, I think they'll know a lot more than you you BUFFOON........[/QUOTE]

The FT has nothing to do with The Times...you buffoon

I love all this Geordie Mafia stuff me like....keep it coming.

That's right, £90 million.
?

£90million isn't a lot to keep in reserve when you consider annual expendiutre is around £750 million

She did get into some trouble i think but not enough. May have had to close her facebook aswell and got 'black and white scum' painted across her garden walls

Sunderland council are the only council in the north east that hasn't made compulsive redundancies with the current governments cuts that would suggest to me that they care about the citizens of this city.

Walk from the Londonderry to the Bridges and look to your right, how much would that cost to put right? And correct me if I'm wrong but don't the council own the leisure center.

f***ing hell. This thread's absolutely nuts.

Starts off about a claim that we've lost a 10k 'marathon'. 2nd post states we've still clearly got a 10k run which should be the thread over.

Cue loads of loons claiming Sunderland councillors are working for Tyneside??!! Clearly not true, as is the claim that council candidates are selected by Labour North. Not in my ward they're bloody not and not in any other wards I know of unless there's been some serious misgivings. The only problem there's been recently is a lack of good quality candidates if anything and that's the real problem.

that would suggest that they're looking after themselves, surely?

Or is that a whoosh?

What the fuck has that got to do with:

heard we cou;dn't even hold on to our 10km marathon, even thats gone to Gateshead.....why don't they spend a fortune on the sea front, make it a good place to eat and drink...?

Labour North suspended the sunderland candidate selection committee some time ago - ask Denny Wilson who selects who stands and he'll confirm its Labour North.

Sunderland has a new, committed group who have formed a local branch of the Green Party. They are 'of the Left' and if you don't want to vote Labour but can't face voting Tory, Lib Dem or whoever vote Green as a protest.

The problem with Sunderland is the people.

Im dyed in the wool Labour. I believe in the fundamental ideology of Labour. I believe in the welfare state, NHS, fairness for all and dragging people out of poverty. However, although I am a Labour member, I find myself often disappointed with our representatives (particularly on a local level). Far too many councillors are in it for the wrong reasons. They appear to be in it for the razzamataz, ceremony and status rather than putting the city and people first. There is way too much anti Tory/ anti opposition nonsense within the party than goes back decades. This is obviously not unique to Labour as it goes on just as much within the opposition parties.

What is needed is a new influx of members in the political parties. Some new direction, imagination and freshness is desperately needed in our city. Im not talking about knackers like Morrissey and Lee Martin who surf on the waves of Ashcrofts milions Im talking about genuine people who can provide an honest debate without dragging up party political nonsense. Labour has made slight inroads (Bridget Phillipson for example has been an active voice in Parliament for Sunderland South and Houghton) but needs to do way more. It can only do this through an invigorated membership - and to move away from dusty town halls where aged miners still get together to talk about how bad Thatcher was.

This is where the people of Sunderland are to blame. They arent joining political parties and using their voice - either on the blue or red side of politics.

What happened for years with the Vaux site? People sat on their arses complaining about it instead of holding their council accountable and making life difficult for Tesco's. Its easy to sit and point fingers and twist but noone in Sunderland ever does anything to stand up for their city.

Another thing is the short sightedness of the city. There was a strong minority of people who were against an iconic bridge over the Wear. Rather than focus on the millions it could bring in terms of revenue and redevelopment for the area (see the Angel of the North for a similar effect) they asked who would pay for it and that it would cost the council tax payer millions. Then they have the audacity to complain about the state of the city. Its occasionally a no win situation.

So to conclude, whats needed locally is an energised council where Labour and Tories put political ideology aside and pull together to fight for the improvement of the council - and they can all be accountable. The people can also pull their fingers out and occasionally mobilise for the good of their city. Or we can all just be happy with what we have and shut the fuck up about it all.
