I know this has been done loads of times but since we have ended our exile (well I have, the mrs (nee pics) and kids were born down south) I have seen the city centre close up more recently.

From an outsiders point of view (the mrs ne pics) apart from all the obvious it needs the following;

  • Decent department store (debenhams is a poor mans House of Fraser)
  • Some decent chain pubs like a Pitcher n Piano, Slug and lettuce type affair as opposed to wethespoons all ower)
  • Pizza Express
Not much I know but is there any chance one of these chains would pitch their business in our fair city? (Binns was a cracking store and WIlkinsons have miullered it:cry:)

If any of these organisations thought a place in Sunderland would be viable, dont you think they'd already be here?

I've seen some developments on my travels and those bars and restaurant, although chains would be a great idea for when the office blocks go up on the vaux site, offices surrounding an epicentre of a decent hotel, bars and restaurants. Seen similar in reading centre, and around broad street in Birmingham. Bars and restaurants get trade during the day from the offices, then at night plenty of bars within close proximity to attract people to the area. Will never happen though! The trouble with sunderland, is that its too spread out, if the whole place could be knocked down and start again, now that would be canny

From an economic point of view, there is little comparision between those places that you mention and Sunderland, unfortunately.

As long as the same spivs are in the Civic centre, we're on plums. The place will remain a shithole!

There are plebs in all the cities I have lived in like. I think the Vaux site is massive for the future of the city.

It needs more places to eat as opposed to Italians/Curry houses anarl

I've waited over 11 years to see the Vaux site developed and unfortunately I doubt I'll ever see it done in my lifetime.
Then again with their track record, I wonder if that's not a good thing.

Sunderland is one of the poorest areas in the country and that is not the fault of the council. That is why there are very few quality shops in the centre.

Can be achieved on a slightly smaller scale, a concentration of office blocks brings with it people with money to spend.

Very little effort has been made to.attract jobs to the city center and bring with it people with money to spend. Imagine the likes of doxy park or Rainton meadows brought to the city centre?

I hope you are right. Have you been to the Sunniside area? that's quite nice afew decent bars and restuarants dotted around a park area.

True, The Echo building would have been perfect had the city been a hub of working activity. i.e. had te Vaux site been up and running.

As someone else says, we could bring a micro version of say brum or manchester to the vaux site and build fom there.

What big call centre cattle sheds in the centre? that sounds quite depressing actually.

I think he means office work in general, even if it is call centres they will be spending their coin in the city which would tempt the likes of pizza express say to have a franchise nearby?

I wouldnt have thought people earning little more than minimum wage would be able to afford that. There is a real need to attract quality, better paid, jobs to the city but dont ask me how you do that.

You mean to be built and then to stand empty!!!

I think the vaux site would be ideal for a city square, in a similar style to Nottingham, Leeds or Sheffield. It would help create a focal point for the city which is rather lacking just now.

tbf though that vaux site could be an awesome location to have your office, that plot of land can be a beautiful quayside given the right ideas thrown at it. I know the council have ballsed up in the past but with them finally ending the long battle with tescos (of their own doing like) maybe long term it can be something decent that attracts companies

The point I'm trying to get across is that they've built these places out of town, plenty.of them, and it would have been better to concentrate of one big business area, although then you have the argument about getting transport links to the city centre?

What sort of businesses would be attracted to Sunderland?
More Call Centres? International Accountancy firms? Banks? Whatelse has the City left to offer.
I can just imagine some high flyinging accountant working their popping over to Idols for his lunch and stepping over the dreggs of society who have just been bailed at the Majistrates Court.
The whole of the city centre needs bombing and start again
