Sunderland and Alvarez

Got to be up there with the worst transfer in the history of the sport this?
We must be the only club on the planet stupid enough to agree to a clause that we had to buy a player if we avoided relegation regardless of how shit he might turn out to be.

The clowns running the club now are an utter joke but Short and his mob weren't much better.

Short and his mob were worse. At least the current collection of misfits seem to have the club living within it’s means. Short’s reign was a time of frightening excess punctuated with incompetence and the odd scandal thrown in for good measure.

Remember when we almost got docked points for playing an unregistered player? How f***ing amateur is that man?

No fucker will want to work for the club at this rate. The club need to be 100% sure about what they're doing before going down this route. Time to rely on the peerless judgement of Stewart Donald and Charlie Methven then. Cross whatever you've got, people.
If you can’t depend on a highly paid qualified professional To provide a thorough and balanced medical opinion then there is no hope for anyone seeking treatment in the NHS or privately. All those letters after their names are important and attest to their qualifications and professional standing. If they fall short they should certainly be held to account and for which all professionals will have indemnity cover through their professional association or some other mechanism.
In this case, the club have been badly advised and i think they have a good case against the doctor for his incompetence, perhaps including a sub-standard assessment of Alvarez’s physical state.

It’s ridiculous that we paid for him. Yet never had him under contract. Surely when we paid a fee for him, he should have been our player?

From reading the article why did we even try and not pay Inter Milan?. It was so obvious we would have to pay and we could have saved money on interest and fees.
The legal strategy and oversight of contractual matters relating to this deal seem to have been woefully inadequate.
Doubtless it will all come out at the hearing where I expect the good doctor will argue that most if not all of the losses were caused by the club’s own decisions( terminating Alvarez, failing to exercise reasonable diligence/ prudence in negotiating terms) . It will be an uncomfortable and embarrassing hearing for the club, whatever the outcome.
Might be wrong but thought the proceedings started under Short and have just continued in one form or another after court of arbitration found against us.
I think you’re right. This is legacy litigation from the Short era. I recall Donald saying they had to go back to Short because they the liability to Alvarez and Inter was unexpected

It’s a classic from Donald. Ultimately it will cost the club money hiring the barristers and all the rest. Meanwhile, no personal cost.

Margaret Byrne and Gary the Hair, the irreversible decline all started on their watch.

Absolutely horrendous promotions for them both within the club, no previous experience nor qualifications for running a football club...apart from into the ground.

Funny how Bryne became an agent for half of our team around the time she was monumentally f***ing the club to bits!.....she shouldn't be able to work in football again.

I certainly hope so. However the club need to be absolutely certain. The reputational damage this will do if we’ve miscalculated will be huge.

Donald should be pursuing the two mercineries that he had to sack rather than the actions of a club doctor 3 years before he acquired the club.

Or maybe that woman who was CEO over the Johnson cover-up and giving Cattermole a ludicrous contract.

Or maybe the DOF who made all those mad signings.

Or whichever clown didnt have it in contracts that every relegation = 40% pay cut.

Or whoever allowed Rodwell to not have a pay cut and continue to receive £70k a week for 12 months.

All those above are far more culpable than a Dr who may or may not have missed an injury.

The party/parties at fault are UEFA and/or FIFA. When the 'transfer' didn't happen they should have stepped in and made a ruling immediately, instead they let it drag on for months/years by which time the player had moved on and SAFC lost the opportunity to use 'their' player or resell him. If anything SAFC should have demanded that UEFA paid Inter out of their fiddle funds
I see what you're saying, but we didn't lose the opportunity to use him. We had the opportunity, he automatically became our player but we breached our contract with Inter and breached our contract with the player by not paying him. We should accepted our obligation to buy him then sued Inter to recoup some of the money if we thought we had a case (we didn't, it was weak as piss). Instead we just denied all knowledge til they sued us.

Don't know the ins and outs of this court case but it was first mentioned last year or the year before and it looked mental then. Think the gist of it is he doctor couldn't do a proper medical because we were rushing the deal through and needed it done ASAP so he reported on what he could. Suppose the courts will decide but it seems a massive waste of time and just seems like Donald taking a punt on the off chance of getting something back.

Because some jobs on the line and Short was mad so heads where about to roll. Fight it looks like its not your fault or accept responsibility pay Inter get sacked....hmmmm

Who was the CEO at the time should have been sacked....hmmm

Dominic Matteo? Bob Murray played a blinder talking the FA into only fining us as we would have been relegated to the equivalent of league 1 otherwise.

But you're right, getting it wrong in the first place is amateurish at best.

Typically Matteo went on to do canny at Liverpool and Leeds too.

This! SAFC were an absolute feeding frenzy for charlatans and chancers under Short
