Sunderland AFC U18s

MLF. Probably was hoping we’d get an 8th to make his dad happy.
It was interesting watching who was clapping when we scored vs when they scored. A healthy contingent of MLFs in. I suppose some parents will have been there for their sons, but torn as they support the other team.

I only know parents of 3 of the mag lads, but I’d imagine the nature of U18 football will mean we have our share of Newcastle supporters playing for us as well.

As a little insight from the lads who play for them, apparently Man City have fantastic individual players which is why they’re doing well, whereas we are by far the best at playing as a team. I’d like to think that bodes well for players making the step up to the U21s in the next couple of years and then through to the first team.

Two sides isn't it? Need the experience and learn how to fail but the critism can't be harsh or over the top at times. We have used mainly 3 15/16 year olds in the 18s side this year. All done great, they'll experience more and have a mini crash every now and then. It's all learning.
I mentioned the lads age not as a dig but as advice/educate that give these lads space and essentially time to develop. I don't care if they play for us, Mags, arsenal whoever. Sure the nufc keeper will take a lot from the game. He's a good lad and a good keeper.
Think it would be quite good to listen to some coach’s and welfare types about this. Do they almost need to hear a little bit of it as they grow up so that one day when they are droped in the first team it isn’t overwhelming if they get that slagging off? But like you say they are still kids really. I think on the whole the vast majority of people who are interested are really supportive of them. The whole thing all the way from when they join is probably quite mentally draining, all the time they have to commit to it, the will I get released or not, will I get my scholarship while at the same time as they do their GCSEs. I suppose it’s why they need a good family/support network round them and why the club need to as well. Sorry I’m babbling , just thought you brought up a good point.

Cheers, might see if I can get away from work.
Aye, I can see both your perspectives that some exposure to failure and the criticism that comes with it may actually be beneficial to some of the lads. But you rightly point out how young they are and all the other pressures they’re already under.

The other big factor is that the criticism they’d face from the more casual fan is often going to be so lacking in nuance that it will likely be counterproductive. As I know you’ll both know, it’s about development at this stage, you can’t judge performances by the same measure you would the first team. There’s too much else going on.

16s are playing in France.
2nd v New Caladonia
4th v R Central African Republic
6th Belgium
8th play off
10th play off

What's the competition mate? And where is New Caledonia?

Edit: Just checked, a group of French islands in the South Pacific.

1 point off top of the table Man City with 4 games to go. We play Man City away Saturday 21st the first team don't play till Sunday the 22nd. Might have a dodge down.
