Stoke think a lot of themselves

Remember that game as well, and it was f***ing disgusting the way they went on. I think it is down to the ref to clampdown on them though. It was the 0-0 game wasn't? I think anyway.

Looking at the stats i posted before they commit the same number of fouls on average as we do, but have slightly worse disciplinary. Going off that game it suggests the refs aren't picking up on their behaviour sometimes.

I think Stoke very clearly exploit rules which aren't taken as given, such as shirt pulling, holding etc. Everyone team does it to an extent, but they make a real point of doing it and I think they actively work on it as a form of mental disintegration. Aesthetically and morally I think it's pretty grim, but like I say, tactically, it's very clever.

Seen as the Europa league and cup final go hand in hand, it can't be viewed as two seperate improvements really, can it?

They're in the Europa league due to a technicality, and finished lower down in the league than they did the previous season.

Plus, your original post was trying to justify Stoke's, quite frankly, horrendous football, and then you didn't laugh at my Peyton Manning joke, which upset me a little.
What do you think of the way we play?

Exactly, if they are getting away with it, why would they stop? They are a very physical team and play to their strengths. In their eyes, they haven't been in such a great position for years, so are hardly going to complain about the tactics that got them there.

If was a Stoke fan I couldn't give a fuck to be honest, and in all honestly would probably enjoy it as it was 'our' style so to speak.

Plus they have seen their club play in a competitive game on foreign soil and i still f***ing haven't:evil:

That should shut a few people up

Not really, the other complimentary stats provide more evidence at the shockingness of Stokes play.

Yes we average 2 long balls more a match but if the balls in play more its more likely to happen. Stokes tatics consist of set piece play and as a result the balls goes out of play a lot.

Stoke also have a shocking number of short passes made and total possesion compared to us. We had on average 10% more possesion, 8% pass completion rate and 100 more short passes a game than Stoke.

This evidence shows we have a vaired game whereas Stoke ARE long ball merchants

I cant think of nothing worse, ive glanced at their threads already and its a mix of Pulis is the new Clough, Coates the new Jack Walker and theyre gonna finish 6th.

are you taking the piss
Pulis is the polar opposite of Clough in their views of how football should be played

Nobody has suggested otherwise. The point being made is that there’s a lot more going on with them though than hitting the ball long and hoping.

And the stats for us I found abit rubbish actually, and I’m pretty optimistic on the whole. They don’t suggest we have a rounded game. They suggest we are still one of the most physically dependant teams in the league, who favour direct tactics over pass and move stuff, and aren’t very good at the pass and move/posession when we try it, or at best very average. We’re not the Total Voteball to Stoke’s Hand of God. No way near. Obviously it’s not as outright simple as that but it won’t be as outright simple as that for any of the other 19 teams either, all will have their reasons for not playing at their best.

Thats what I mean, that why I couldnt post on there.

End of the day if is anyone suggesting we play more long balls than Stoke they are lying as its simple maths.

For every 1% of possesion we had last season we played fewer long balls than Stoke.

Of course we arent direct opposities of Stoke as we only finised a couple of places above them, we are very much in the same mini league.

However Stokes goals come from direct play but a lot of ours are quite well worked goals if you look at our season highlights. However a lot of fans just love to slag the club.

All this BS because people are pissed that they got to a cup final (and therefore into Europe) first, and because they finished above us in the table two out of the three years they've been in the Premier League.

Relax, people!!

This.

I can't STAND Stoke. I wish they would just f*ck off, and take their awful brand of football with them.
I am a purist like Mr. Clough, and it just irritates me. I mean, reaaaally pisses me off, the way they play. Fouling, antagonising, kicking, and playing hard. And the ONE thing that pisses me off more than the way they play, is everyone who has not been on the rough end of it attributes this to "roughing the opposition up" and the "Stoke way" because the ref's haven't recognised a foul. Well fuck off. Because penalties and free-kicks aren't given all the time when they should, so does that mean that because it's not a foul, it should just be accepted as common practice? bullshit.
I will accept things like Delap's throw, hoofing it up, and being physicall as playing within the rules - but by branding this as "Stoke" people let them get away with so much crap its unbelievable. If, like Barton and Cattermole, people KNEW they would go in hard and give away fouls, they would be flagged up. But people believe that they play within the rules, so nothing happens. Utter shit.
Another thing, Crouch is NOT great in the air. Just like Jones. Lazy arses who should boss the air, but just don't. Like Zigic.
Pulis is a dick too, I can't stand him.

Mind, Palacios is a cracking signing.

If you're a "purist", why are you supporting Sunderland?

Not me mate. Like I said, I'm probably more optimistic than anything. Agree that a lot of our goals were well worked, but the well worked moments where the exception rather than the norm I'd say. Which, to be honest, is what you would expect from a midtable team, so I'm not saying that as some huge criticism.

Like Bolton, Blackburn, Boro, The Mags, Ipswich etc the list is endless.

Its time this club had European football and not accept shite.

It will be interesting to see how the season pans out for them.
It would seem with purchases of Jerome and crouch that walters/waters ? will be consigned to the bench at best, and he has been starting to look the part.
I just dont see a front 2 of jones and Crouch working tbh.
I also believe the fee, wages and contract term for crouch could come back to bite them
Time will tell I suppose

thats a fair point but most can't change their allegiance simply because of their current playing style. I am not a fan of the way SAFC approach games atm abd personally feel their is not much entertainment watching them at the moment but i would never support anyone else. I know their are some on here who claim to also support Barca etc. but for me its a big no no

You’re not a purist. You’re a fan of passing football. So am I. But football isn’t purely about passing football. The one thing football really, purely is, is versatile. It’s because it’s flexible and it’s about interpretation rather than one form of approach. It's a game that anyone, of any size, can play, and work out they fit in, and be effective at it.

In fact, passing was pioneered by smaller, physically weaker teams as a means to overcome the very direct, physical, individual focussed sport that football originally was. Just like Stoke have pioneered a form of football that is designed to beat the currently in vogue style of passing football.

but they don't beat anyone who is any good at it or did i miss the game when they turned over man utd

Like all football fans we accept what we're given.

Of course we do, your 100% correct mate. Im just a little fed up of some fans calling us unrealistic and too expectant. There a numerous "smaller" clubs who have achieved more than us, im not asking to compete with the Spurs and Evertons but to be able to compete with the Boltons and Stokes would be nice.

This is my main gripe as well, which is why I found that article very interesting.

Agree again.

To be fair to Sonson, he defends Bruce et all alot more on here, than I do.
