Isn't the point to get rid of teams using blockers, and make them once again try to actually win the ball.

Probably but surely it should be deemed as clever play, as long as they aren't grabbing them I've got no problem with players trying to stiff arm to hold their ground

I get your point but he doesn't impede shawcross at all really, Shawcross still gets up to the point of the cross, certainly doesn't impede his jump either.

You see offensive teams using blockers all the time to get their man free, will they all be fouls now? For me it's clever defending. If someone grabs them and pulls them down then okay a pen but that was a brush.

He did impede him though, Shawcross was pushed back twice, so he'd have got to the ball earlier than he did, had Sterling not pushed him back.

It wasn't a brush at all mate, rewatch it, he pushed him back with hands right on his chest.

His position and way he is facing he has got himself there for one reason only that is to impede the player and not defend the ball, if he doesn't put his arms on him its not a penalty, but if he doesn't he is wasting his time being there in the 1st place. Thats exactly what they are trying to cut out.

Saying its a contact sport doesn't allow all contact does it?

It's a contact sport, so you should be able to block your opponents path to the ball and not go for the ball yourself? The rules do not allow that.

If you have Sky+ rewind it and rewatch it.

Sterling is not looking at the ball, he is stood in front of Shawcross waiting for Shawcross to go towards the centre of the box and puts his hands on his chest to push him back. He has two attempts at stopping Shawcross getting into the box.

You simply cannot do that and saying its a contact sport does not IMO allow that. If that's the case then Shawcross himself should not have given away a penalty by your rules?

Good! Just because everyone does it doesn't mean they should.

I'm always suspicious of people who bang on about it being a contact sport, especially when it's not really relevant. We had a player break his leg from a bad challenge the other year, and all a few of the opposition had to say was 'well it's a contact sport, these things happen'.

Thick inbred fuckwits.

By the letter of the law you're right I'm not disputing that but personal preference for me is that that is not a penalty. Sterling stood his ground and stiff armed Shawcross. If we're saying that is a penalty then there's going to be a ridiculous amount of fouls for clever attacking, defensive play.
