Lehmann and Warner creating an atmosphere so toxic that even the Australian public in general didn't like it eventually. Takes some doing that. I never did think Smith was an arsehole, seems he was bullied into 'buying in' to the way they've acted in the last few years. His lack of experience of the real world could be applied to a lot of modern day sportsmen.

The Atherton interview with Steve Waugh makes an interesting comparison with years gone by. They played it hard but never went too far (often enough) for you to think it was ruining the game.

Not sure I agree marra.

Steve Smith behaved pretty poorly for a few years, even as ODI captain. Look at the way he talked in press conferences etc, he knew what he was doing.

The team got visibly worse under his watch
 
That's pretty damning of the whole Team Australia set up especially at the top.

The thing about the 'cricket bubble' you can see replicated in other sports especially football, and there's been a few stories about SAFC and other clubs over the years, young men - juveniles really earning more money than they know what to do with.

You know they say 'they know where the lines is' but frankly if you using banter to induce mental disintegration you have crossed the line good and proper. Cricket is supposed to be a battle of skills and there's enough pressure without artificially trying to create a mental breakdown.

It's is bullying plain and simple, if it happened in a different walk of life there could be a court case and the victim would be awarded damages.

"But if Smith didn't know, I'll be most surprised."


There is no doubt in my mind they did this during the Ashes, particularly at Perth

Finally got around to reading this. Really good article but the last line nailed it for me

"it's actually possible to be successful without being a prick" something the whole of Cricket Australia could do with learning.
