Steve Howey on Talksport

I had a Panini sticker book with a quote from him that said something like "I was born in Sunderland, but my heart was born in Newcastle".

To be honest, he was a young lad and caught up in all the Keegan shite, probably didn't know the impact of what he was saying at the time. I know that's unforgivable for a lot on here and I have no problem with that. But its good to see that he's at least found the light again.

He never lost it mate. ;)

Read an interview with him a couple of years back.

It was apparently down to McMenemy's belligerence that his Dad didn't let him sign for Sunderland and that Newcastle's set up was far better at the time. He remained a staunch Sunderland supporter but his house used to get done over and all sorts. The interviewer asked him question: "FA Cup Final Day, last minute, against Sunderland, you're one on one with the keeper, what do you do?"

He replied that he'd stick it in the back of the net, because he is a professional footballer.

Fair play to him.

Was a shite striker anyway. Think it was KK who converted him and he never looked back, so probs wouldn't have made it at top level otherwise .

I did some work on house and mentioned it all the time. I've posted it on here numerous time .

Presenter Danny Kelly " as a Newcastle fan steve, what do you make of this?''
SH " I am not a Newcastle fan, I am a Sunderland fan!"

First time I have ever heard him or seen it in print.

Common knowledge tbh

The accent is a clue ffs

I heard him this morning on Talksport. He said he's a Sunderland fan and was saying 'we' when referring to us and also said he spent 14 years at Newcastle so loves the club anarl. Fair enough really, I think when you have been a professional footballer you view things differently to fans.

Did Danny just ignore it?

that is true, used to speak to his dad quite regularly in the hastings

Steve Howey has said he followed Spurs before in the press, so Harper might come out soon...

Mickey Bridges said he followed Spurs as a kid when he was with us first time round.

Later on joined the Mags for a short spell - then said he was a Mag fan as a kid.

Don't blame either him or Howey for covering up their childhood allegiance , bearing in mind the shit some have taken over the years due to it

He allways denied being a Sunderland supporter as a lad, which was utter bollox (just because he owned a Liverpool shirt didnt mean he followed them) He and his entire family are Sunderland and he's a disgace for not having the balls to admit it as a mag player. Hes a skunk turncoat as far as im concerned.

Both Lee and Steve were born in Sunderland I actually think more specificaly it was Easington, both grew up supporting Sunderland and still are huge SAFC fans.

I remember while Steve was at Newcastle he did one of these question and answer sessions and was asked who he supported as a boy and replied Tottenham not daring to say Sunderland as his house would probably have been bricked.

Nope, he asked who would finish higher and 'our' Steve said Newcastle would as he didn't know 99% of of players

Some fan.

Anyhow knowing Gardner, Bardsley, Ji, Catts, Wickham, Brown, Larsson and a few others from last season doesn't make me feel more confident.

When you don't know the buggers there is always hope.

Nah, they were born in Gilley Law, then moved to Thorney Close.
