Steve Howey on Talksport

Lived in Farra til someone put his windows out and threatened his family.

Same happened to Lee when he lived just off the Silkie road behind Gilley Law. He was playing for us at the time.

I said "happened" which isn't quite true, he spotted them in the act, grabbed a fencepost and gave chase. Good job for them he wasn't the fastest. :D

I remember when he was on the itv north east football show thing, he said he made sure his kids supported Sunderland.

Read an interview with him a couple of years back.

It was apparently down to McMenemy's belligerence that his Dad didn't let him sign for Sunderland and that Newcastle's set up was far better at the time. He remained a staunch Sunderland supporter but his house used to get done over and all sorts. The interviewer asked him question: "FA Cup Final Day, last minute, against Sunderland, you're one on one with the keeper, what do you do?"

He replied that he'd stick it in the back of the net, because he is a professional footballer.

Fair play to him.

We all knew he was Sunderland before he went to the mags. I may be wrong, but didn't he say something along the lines of "I class myself as a geordie now" at some point?

Howey is Sunderland to the core, always has been, he claimed he was a spurs fan to stop the stupidity which would have followed (and did) had he made his support public. bloody good player in his day

I used to play against Steve at school like, I used to play for farra & he used to play centre forward for St Aidens, I always thought the reason he got picked up was because of his size, he was massive, proper king of the kids stuff, anyway typical though that our scouts at the time missed another one from the area.

When a few clubs came sniffing around his old man told officials at Sunderland how much he wanted to play for us, Big Mac turned the offer down.

I met his parents in the Hastings Hill after my uncle's funeral last year.

Nice bloke who also remembered my grandad who used to train some local teams (Biddick IIRC, Herrington CW).

He gets tickets for the mags home games and told us about the shite setup at SAFC when his kids were starting their careers. Also a hint at the wage that Steve was getting when he was at Man City.

I don't blame them for playing for the best team they could, my other grandad had the chance to sign for Newcastle as a kid but ended up down the pit for 50 years. A lucky escape!?

Presenter Danny Kelly " as a Newcastle fan steve, what do you make of this?''
SH " I am not a Newcastle fan, I am a Sunderland fan!"

First time I have ever heard him or seen it in print.

I thought it was common knowledge that him and his whole family are Sunderland fans?

Well I hadn't heard of him til he played for them so I don't know how you presume I knew he supported us beforehand...

I had a Panini sticker book with a quote from him that said something like "I was born in Sunderland, but my heart was born in Newcastle".
