I've just readsome quotes from his agent, saying it's purely the fact that he can't get motivated a 100% anymore and he only wants to wear the shirt when he can give a 100. So no ugly stuff in his pirvate life.

A good player with a degree of skill and the ability to get out of tight situations. But to say he was one of he best players seen in a Sunderland shirt leads me to believe that a lot of posters must be johnny come latelys. Do people not remember some of the great football in Reidy's era and even those players couldn't hold a candle to some of the older players.

Regardless sorry to hear he has problems and hope every thing turns out ok

This.

Re: Sttttteeeeeeeeed :(

Did this get mainstream news? I haven't heard it at all. Don't come on here much.

Re: Sttttteeeeeeeeed :(

tbf to the OP this seems like a blog confirming his retirement everything on here was just rumour.

Steed retires

According to few reports.

One of the most skillful players to have played for Sunderland in my young lifetime and a personal favourite, 31 is nay age to retire.

Soz if seb

Re: Sttttteeeeeeeeed :(

Is that implying that his Father died and that that has led to his decision?

Hope he isn't being too hasty as it would be very diffcult to come back after a spell out.

One of the earlier posters was right in saying he was our best defenders - when he was o the pitch, Sunderland had more posession and therefore less likely to concede (his work-rate was very good when not in posession as well). Being subbed on 70minutes every week led directly to us being unable to defend a lead.

Probably the most technically gifted player we have had in my lifetime and I'd have him back in a shot.

copied from the fulham site.

STEED Malbranque has shocked football by hanging up his boots in the week when Fulham signed three new players – including £10.6million Bryan Ruiz.

The Whites hero for five years between 2001-06, and the one greeted with “Ste-e-e-e-ed” by the Fulham faithful every time his name was announced, has stunned French club St Etienne by walking out on them less than two months after joining from Sunderland.

Still only 31, Malbranque is understood to have rowed with his father over the contract negotiated by Malbranque senior, and begged his new team to be released from the deal.

Sources close to St Etienne reckon his father’s interference throughout his career, including when he was at Fulham, came to a head this week.

The source said: “When Steed saw and understood the real terms of his contract he decided enough was enough.

“He expected his father, of all people, to do a better job.”

St Etienne coach Christophe Galtier added: "Steed came to see me to say that he was having personal problems. I saw a troubled guy and I'm worried about him."
