The very first one was great and set the bar for sci-fi films to come. The next 2 were ok but the later releases just didn't have the impact. They should have left it as a trilogy.

The ones he got right had help from other people. 4 was a space remake of Kurosawa's Hidden Fortress (more or less) and 5 and 6 had other people writing and directing. He has good ideas but needs other people to put them out there for him; hence his idea for a bullwhip wielding archaeologist was called Indiana Smith and Spielberg said "nice idea but let's call him Indiana Jones"

The last series one was a direct rehash of the first film, IIRC. Grossing well with nostalgic nerds doesn't really say much for a film's quality, IMHO. You just have to look at how popular some of these garbage comic movies and TV shows are, for example. Each to their own, like.
