St George’s Day

Never seen people mortal on St George’s Day, unlike St Paddies Day. Strange that they’d want to celebrate their day and not our own imo

See plenty of people use it as an excuse to get mortal tbh. You're obviously trying to make a point by posting the thread. The saints days are a pile of shite anyway.

If you want to celebrate being 'English' you don't need to wait until April 23rd do you?

People are religious when it suits them. Most people that will celebrate it probably hardly ever go to church but if the bars are doing cheap drinks 'Hello'

That is like saying you don't have to celebrate Christmas on Christmas day. I am proud to be English and St George's Day is an occasion when I can celebrate it. Nothing to do with religion at all otherwise
I could celebrate it every day of the year...hold on, you may have a point :D

What does celebrating being English even mean?

For me having been raised in the West of England, lived a long time in London and travelled a lot when I think of England I think of hot days, cider, Morris dancing and cheese, combined with our global metropolis which has been a diverse melting pot of cultures from around the world for centuries.

That’s probably something completely different to what those on here advocating celebrating being English think of. Not saying that in a bad way, but I just think that’s why the country never gets behind St George’s day because we do not as a country have a shared common identity in like Wales and Scotland do to a degree.

Wales may get behind St David’s Day because he is a an emblem of their regional identity. If there was a patron saint of Wessex I would celebrate that with passion for the same reason. But St George means nothing to me really.

Being English means getting up, having an Italian coffee and American cereal for breakfast, going to and from work in your German car, having a French baguette for lunch, followed by pasta when you get home, going to an Irish pub in the evening and the weekend, getting pissed on Belgian or Australian lager, and finishing off with a pizza, curry or Chinese, which you throw up onto your Egyptian cotton sheeted bed when you stagger home.

Makes you proud.

We like variety and happy to embrace many different cultures. A nice set of diverse lads and lasses that should be celebrated.

Aye, that’s us, great isn’t it.

Is St. Patricks day not just bigged up by the media because of the irish influence/culture in America?

I've never heard anyone say that they can't wait to go out for St. Georges Day. I don't understand why anyone would be upset that people don't celebrate it as much either.

It’s strange as this thread confirms we’re not a nationalistic people, despite the murmurings of some who shit themselves at the thought of celebrating our country.

Examples? I think it's more that people just aren't that arsed. I celebrate my country every day by following it's laws and paying my taxes.
