St George’s Day

St George's Day is always a bit of a sad day for me so I'm hoping the lads give me something to cheer about. On the night of 23/24 April 1982 my good mate and colleague Petty Officer Aircrewman Kevin 'Ben' Casey became the first casualty of the ‘Class of 82’ en route to The Falklands when his Sea King crashed into the sea in bad weather. The pilot survived and was picked up by another helicopter from HMS Hermes but sadly Ben (who was only 26) didn't make it and was pronounced ‘missing presumed drowned’ after an extensive search.

Everyone knows St. George was Turkish by now, surely?
Everybody knows that Turkey or Islam didn’t exist when St. George was alive, doesn’t stop knackers with agendas spouting shite though, does it ?
😉
Nope, just I feel I can't be proud of my country when there are so so many things wrong with it, and a refusal to take responsibility for our mistakes along with celebrating success. It's a personal thing and I do envy those who feel patriotic, it just doesn't work for me.
Not being funny but I suggest you try working and living abroad for a while. The distance from home and exposure to what the rest of the world is really like (rather than what is in the media) puts the relative merits of the UK nations into perspective.

I would love to have worked abroad , but my particular career path doesn't lend it's self to that. I have travelled loads, both as a "tourist" and as exploring and really seeing what places are like. So I would say I have had exposure to the rest of the world other than what the media says. I used to celebrate it, I used.to be so patriotic, just not sure what's changed. I think it's.just because I am so comfortable being me that I don't feel the need to define me by attaching myself to this country.

Again just to point out, I am not looking for bites or fights, just talking out loud to try and reason why I feel like this. And others who celebrate their nationality do that, and seem to have a great time doing it.

I’m in Catalonia for it, where it’s actually celebrated and everybody comes together. I’ll by buying Mrs. SR7 (no) the customary rose and she’ll be buying me the customary book. I love coming here for Sant Jordi, I feel like I can celebrate without people thinking you’re in the EDL or the like.
f***ing pathetic Catalans. Hoy the book in the sea and tell Mrs. SR7 he was a Turk who never even went to Catalonia.
