St. Bede was a very clever bloke. He was the first person to work out the tide tables. He also advised Rome when Easter should be held. In literacy terms he was the first person to put the English language into a written form. Thus we (generally the North East) speak English as she was first spoken.
All very interesting and factuall.

He`d be embarrassed by your spelling of factual though;)

Also completed his 'Historia Ecclesiastica Gentis Anglorum' (The Ecclesiastical History of the English People) in 731 - the first history written in England.

i remember a couple of years ago the south bank show had a program about Bede. it began with Melvin Bragg by a river saying "this is where it began for Bede on the banks of the Tyne" ffs:evil: its shame a lot of people in this town don't know the significance of bede or St Peters. The birthplace of English consciousness as one historian described this city.

Sadly people today will be more familiar with Roger's Profanosaurus and so, while they wouldn't have a clue about the English converting to Christianity, they'd know a wizard's sleeve if they saw one.

I think you are forgetting the little matter of Latin, Norse, German and French in that statement.

Why isnt there more made of St Bede by Sunderland?
