How about Billingham Synthonia (who are known as the Synners as it so happens) for being the only English football club with a made up word as the second part of their name?

Wasn't it the plastic they used to make in their factory?

Edit: almost right - short for synthetic ammonia.

Charlton Athletic are referred to in commentary, written articles, and supporters as The Addicks. Though that might be a tribute to former player Ally Dick.

To not be named after their real name in English football.

Tottenham's name comes from the name of a 14th-century man from Northumberland, Sir Harry Hotspur who featured in one of Shakespeare’s plays, Henry the Fourth. He was a soldier, and a very fierce fighter and his descendants owned land in the Tottenham Marshes which became Tottenham. So, the team from Tottenham adopted this name and became Tottenham Hotspur, which is shortened to ‘Spurs’.

You only had to explain.
