They're really hard to see taking pot luck but there is at least one hide set up to observe them in a natural setting (chargeable of course) - best plan a trip and chase the highland wildlife. It's addictive mind.Personally I want to go on a pine marten watch. Springwatch is getting me obsessed with them.
Yes mate - the lesser is more barred across the back often with a red patch on top of head or nape of neck only seen in juveniles in GSW - like the chick in your pic. Not an issue in the UK there's also a Middle spotted woodpecker to add to the fun!
Why would you call a Kestrel Ashley?
You really wouldn't. I work with a Keith. Hartlepool accent and a beer belly. Not at all fast.I'd call it Keith.

In their dreams...possibly...Keiths can fly. Kester is my favourite K name. One of my friend's cats. Not all Keiths are alike, some are fat and from Hartlepool and others are kestrels....

And also the weaver Kester Woodseaves from Precious Bane, who was the inspiration. Great BBC drama - early 90s? (with the wonderful Janet McTeer and Clive Owen) which you can't get on dvd for love nor money. Bit of a sore point with me.Kester appears to be vaguely African and also the global leader in solder and solder related products.
I won't be if they get the kingfishers. But they certainly are fiesty little things.Huge fan of the stoat, me.
It's June Ffs.Hopefully the change of location breathes a bit of new life into this once great show.
Starting in 10 mins BBC2 in case anyone doesn't know....
