SPOILER-tastic No Time To Die Discussion Thread

For anyone who's seen the film (or doesn't care about having the plot spoiled for then), let's discuss the film on here, free to you about anything that happened including the ending.

Overall, I liked it, thought it was a very decent entry in the series and a good way for Craig to sign off. He's been a terrific Bond even when a couple of the films haven't been all that good. I thought the story was genuinely exciting, the action was a bit more low-key than you might expect but I liked that, not every blockbuster film needs to be Marvel or Fast and Furious.

Opening sequence: good stuff, handles the "links to the past" thing they're doing a lot better than Spectre did. I liked the way they tied it back to Lazenby and OHMSS. (And for proper Bond nerds, later they tied it back to Dalton with the 80s Aston which I liked, Craig is the true successor to him)

Bond theme: thought it was fine, certainly better than that Sam Smith dirge and the shambles they had for Quantum of Solace. Not a top Bond theme, and not the best of the Craig era (that's Chris Cornell), but did the job.

New characters: Lashana Lynch was good as another Double O agent who actually gets through a film instead of being killed off before the story gets going. Could perhaps have given her more to do but this was Bond's story. Ana de Armas was terrific as the CIA agent, slightly disappointed that they didn't bring her back for the final mission but it would have been a bit crowded if they had.

Villain: a bit meh, I thought. I like Rami Malek and he didn't do anything wrong, he was just a bit humdrum. Just your run of the mill psycho with a weapon of mass destruction and an island lair, didn't stand out like Silva or Le Chiffre. Obviously miles better than that wet fart from QoS or the mess they made of Blofeld in Spectre (although Blofeld was better here however briefly).

Killing off key characters: sorry to see Felix Leiter go, he's been a mainstay of Bond since the Connery days. I actually think it was a mistake. They obviously wanted to give Bond as much personal stakes and emotional resonance but there was already plenty of that. As for Bond himself, wow. It sort of makes sense at the end of Craig's tenure to give the character a proper send off and it worked well within the film. Perhaps it would have been too much of a shiny happy ending for him to just sail off into the sunset with Madeline and his new daughter. Cracking end to a great final mission on the island as well. But some people will no doubt hate it.

Speaking of his daughter, it was fine to introduce that to the story and it was well done and everything, but it caused a HUUUUUUUUGE plot hole. MI6 have supposedly been keeping an eye on her all this time in case she works for Spectre but they didn't notice her going off and having a baby, or do the maths and put two and two together about who the father is. Where the fuck was Madeline hiding her all that time?

The obvious question after that is what next for Bond. It says in the credits James Bond will return, because of course he will. They're not going to just drop a character who is the centre of the longest running franchise in film.

Two main possibilities as I see it. Firstly they could carry on, and have a new recruit to the Double 0 section who takes the name James Bond and 007 designation. Maybe in these days of social media accounts they need to give whole new identities to agents. Or they just reboot again. Craig became a Double 0 at the start of Casino so they left behind all the previous stories. Moore and Dalton were both reboots, less so Brosnan. The advantage of fully rebooting is you could get Leiter back, the advantage of carrying on with a new recruit is you can keep the existing characters like Nomi, Moneypenny etc. Or they could just keep them on and reboot like they did with Judi Dench.

My preference would be a.younger Bond this time, it wouldn't make sense to have an older Bond like Elba or Hardy when you're starting again from scratch. So my picks would be either Nicholas Hoult or Sope Dirisu. And to be more of a spy action thriller and less of an attempt to be a superhero film with insane stunts. Mission Impossible does that perfectly well already. And carry on with the idea of other Double 0 agents in the team.

Agree - there was no character development at all for him. Saw him for 2 minutes at the start, then 30 second snippets at the end with the worlds shortest fight.

Liked the film overall though. Nearly cried for the first time ever in 35 years at the end

Thor’d from Reddit.

Didn't care for it

Lea Seydoux and Daniel Craig have 0 chemistry. They have negative chemistry. Craig sparks more with Naomi Harris and she's in like 2 minutes of the movie.

I have no idea what Remi Malik's endgame was. Kill spectre and then.. ? Wipe out everyone? That was a weird leap. Is this taking place in the Utopia universe?

Who the heck did bionic eye guy work for. At the start they're chasing bond after he visits vespers grave.

So they're working for blofield?

But then he's with Remi Malik's character? Did he switch sides? Were they just unrelatedly chasing Bond at the start but then...why?

They wouldn't have cared about Bond then, and Lea Seydoux a character didn't go into hiding; so if they were after her they could have picked her up in the 5 year jump. She was literally working a 9-5

Why was evil scientist so quick to betray spectre? Did he even work for spectre? He gets a phone call from Remi and is like 'yea ok sure, I guess I'm evil now'.

Why doesn't an EMP pulse strong enough to wipe out an entire level of a hardened concrete bunker not disable nanobots or for that matter, earpieces.

Can’t really argue with the above.

I think this is a good article about why he had to die, but I think the story could have changed to not have him die. Ruined it for me to be honest. Maybe after watching the full story arc again I might appreciate it more.

I think anyone who has a daughter would fail to be moved by those final scenes, for me it was a good film that should have ended at the end of the mission and not have the couple minutes of fluff at the end and also maybe could have had 30 minutes cut from the running time.
Craigs bond is the only one I have really engaged with, dont think I've watched many if any of the previous bond films all the way through.

He didn’t even have a good death or a one liner thrown at him when he died.

As for one liners “Do you know what time it is….. time to die” has to be up there with one of the worst ever.

Film was waaaaaayyy to long, nodded off during the conversataion bond was having with Malek. The first 90 minutes were great but it really dragged on from there.

Sad to see Felix being killed off but as bond was also killed off and is coming back theres no reason felix can't too.

Can only see them going back to films set in the 60s with a younger bond and probably a younger felix which would be a good thing.

I loved it and can’t believe they killed off Bond but Craig will have had a say in that I bet. Notice 007’s outfits some nods to Roger Moore there imo.

They’ll do a 007 movie with the same cast before they do another Bond film imo but it gives creative freedom for a little while. Loads of Easter eggs throughout the film and loves the end song “all the time in the world “

You reckon? I'm all for them doing a "Hobbs and Shaw" and expanding the world of the Double 0 section, but I didn't get the feeling that was their next move tbh.

@jacko100 don't personally see them going back to the 60s, I think there's enough retro stuff around already. I think they'll go young and reboot but similar to how they did with Casino Royale, Bond has always been contemporary. Personally I would like them to play up the advent of a new Cold War with eastern superpower(s).

Nice nod to OHMSS.

Tend to agree. It would be better to have something like (given it was a response to the scientist saying he's got the weapons to wipe out her entire race in one go): "I prefer to wipe out your kind one at a time" then boot him into the acid bath.

It was OK.....I couldn't get into it though.....they should've stopped after Skyfall as that was amazing.

Rolled my eyes a bit when Bond had a daughter...

some nice throw backs to previous Bond's, big island...old Astons....

as mentioned on here, Nicholas Hoult is my shout for next Bond...
Was the soundtrack impressive? Hans almost always does an impressive job.
yes....always decent.

Could have just told him to fuck off and it would have been better.

It’s up there with this gem.

“Do you know what happens to a toad when it gets hit by lightning?”

I don’t think you can go that route without the risk of offending a sizeable market.

I’d enjoy a few set back in the 60s, but is that too big a risk for attracting younger viewers?

I just think bringing the lass in as 007 wasn’t just for this film there’s a story there and if they want to keep the same cast they’ll have to do a 007 they can’t keep the same cast with a new Bond

I think a spin off is a good idea, it's almost impossible to get big films signed off unless they're part of a "franchise" they've already heard of. Just didn't think it was what they'd do before another Bond. But thinking about it maybe they will, fine by me. I just always wondered why previous Bond films only ever mentioned other Double 0 agents either getting killed or not being someone they'd want on the mission instead of Bond. It made it seem like all the other agents were shit.

Overthinking Bond is for Warhammer fans
Thought it ticked all the boxes and tied everything up nicely
Cars, gadgets, fights, sassy sexy ladies, few bad guys ,fab locations ,whisky and sharp suits and Whitehall

I find non of the franchise age that well ,they were above average for a young lad back in the day but cheesy to watch back
All the craig ones i can watch again . Don't think i'll even turn out for the new Bond

Bond is the character, 007 is the codename in MI6. The character is dead so can't come back, somebody else could use the codename though (and have).

If a receptionist at work died and was replaced you wouldn't then say to the new one that you thought they were dead
