Speakman on the transfer window so far - Echo article

People should ask themselves: Would they have preferred us to sign Macfadzean so we could start the season with a left back, or potentially end up with a better player on August 30th?
Good question. Throw the financial aspect of paying another wage in there too. I'd have no problem looking at catching up a few games if we add real quality to the squad between the season starting and the window closing.

If they don't, well that's the time to judge.

4 league games until the window closes i believe, so I want to judge it when it closes.

Just wish we had a LB as I think we have more natural cover at RB.

In all seriousness its absolutely the right approach. I'd much prefer to see us play our youngsters, develop slowly but fail to go up this year rather than sign a bunch of has beens or league one journeymen on big contracts that might get us up but also leave us hamstrung next year and come back down (appreciate its not necessarily and either/or situation). Our problem for years has been short term thinking and panic buys. Lets make the right decisions not the quick ones.
That would definitely the right approach on paper but Evans and Pritchard are the sort signings I'd have expected us to make if Donald was still running the show.

Certainly an attempt to placate a frustrated fan base, won’t wash IMO.

If anyone on this board couldn’t deliver in their own professional role, regardless of mitigating circumstances, they would face pressure to get results.

Needs to pull his finger out and get some players over the line quickly. This is shaping up to be one of the worst transfer windows of recent years and there has been a few!

The state the squad is currently in is an absolute disgrace.

"On the field, we're really comfortable with the progress that we're making," Speakman said.
"You want to try and change the style of play to something that people want to come and watch, and I think you can tangibly see we're working towards that as we change the personnel, the head coach gets time to work with the players etc.

"I was on the record last season saying that it can be difficult to achieve that when you have those performance markers every Saturday and Tuesday, with next to no training time in between.

Off the pitch we want to make a few more signings to address the areas where we feel we're in need of extra players. Stuart [Harvey] and the guys and as a team, we're working really hard to do that."

With the start of a pivotal campaign days away, Sunderland are looking to recruit a striker and at least one more centre-back as well as addressing the full-back issue before the window closes.

That lack of depth has understandably led to concern amongst some supporters about the early stages of the season, with Lee Johnson likely at this stage to be asking some players to operate out of position, at least initially.

We felt we were very-well prepared at the start of the window," he said.

"We've been successful in acquiring some of the targets we set out to get, and we feel we've been really diligent in how we've gone about that in terms of the types of players and how they fit it into our playing style.

"We want to bring a youthful squad to Sunderland but it's also about getting a blend.

We want more acquisitions. It is a difficult marketplace at the minute. We've found ourselves with offers to clubs and players and at the minute, not been able to get them over the line.

"That's not through any lack of intent from either the people operating the football club or who own the football club, but I think you have to be respectful of the marketplace at the moment and some clubs don't want to let players go, and so sometimes you have to change and move direction.

"Ultimately what we're trying to do is identify quality over quantity, and I think every Sunderland fan would respect that.

"The difficulty you've always got when a transfer window closes after a season starts, you get this difficult period where we all want the team to be ready for the seventh but the market moves until the end of August.
Your more interested in us than your own lot atm aren’t you?

Feel they have been successful with the signings they have made. Do people really look at the imports and feel satisfied. Or are we not supposed to scrutinise what nonesense it is.

No fullbacks at this stage of pre season is a f***ing disgrace

I agree with the idea of waiting to sign the right players and not just signing any old shite to fill a space.

However they’ve known since April what positions need filling. 4 months down the line we’re no further forward. It’s a complete shit show and Harvey and Speakman need questioning.

Any good feeling there was around this new regime is quickly dwindling.

They need to start getting deals done rather than "close"......then nothing. Patience is wearing thin even among those who generally agree with the approach.

You start to wonder whether the people implementing it are the problem rather than the policy in place.

Yeah we can only really question the people mate. Think the policy they’re trying to implement seems to work well at other clubs.

Worrying me that they’re willing to start the season with one of the clubs best young prospects playing out of position to fill a space mind.

We signed Macfadzean in October ;)
That's the worry........if you don't get the ones you want between now and August 30th you end up with players who are without a club because no one wanted them!

I was just using him as an example because he was available, and i'm sure would have come back, until last week.

This, fuck signing the likes of Dobson, Mcfadzean or a Danny Graham.

Everyone is frustrated by the lack of players coming in but throwing good money after bad is what has led us to where we are today!
