Speakman on the transfer window so far - Echo article

He speaks sense but at the same time it isn't acceptable that we are heading into the first league game without a recognised fullback on either side.

There has to be a balance between value for money and absolutely shafting yourself from the start. We aren't talking millions needing to be spent, but we should have invested before now and brought some fullbacks in.
It will just be silly wages some will want to sign

Totally agree that we endeavour to sign only quality lads, he still needs to deliver success or be held to account.

who carries the can? him or the gaffer?.

Well if we go off data, hoe come we signed Evans? Good player at this level but always has niggles.🤷‍♂️
To offer a possible explanation, they have faith in Dan Neil and feel that, should he get one of those niggles, he can step up?

Pre-season is generally an unreliable judge of a sides potential.

Speakman can dress it up however he likes, having no fullbacks at all five days before the season starts is shocking for a professional club.
It's far from ideal I agree, but my point was it won't weaken us significantly.
Time will tell.

Whilst appreciative of the challenges they're facing, it's completely unacceptable for any team at any level to be 6 days away from the start of a new season and to have no left backs or right backs.

Regardless of any difficulties in the market, that's very poor and simply not good enough.

You just can't wait until near the end of the window to get business done if you have serious ambitions of hitting the ground running and getting promoted at a canter, which should be the expectation of all involved.

The end of the window is 6 games into a new season. Then players will need 4-8 weeks to settle in and become accustomed to the way the manager wants them to play. Suddenly, you're 10+ games in!

Of course, someone like Jebbison plus 2 full backs in this week and things look a lot different!

"Always has niggles" he fractured his skull and shattered his eye socket after getting kicked in the face then fractured his big toe when he got back so he was out for longer. Hardly niggles are they.

Unsurprisingly speaks well, has done every time since he joined. Actions is where he will be judged though, as others have said having no full backs at all at this stage is pathetic. Will wait until the end of the window before judging but he really needs to get it right next 3 weeks.

Pretty much my thoughts on it.
As I’ve said previous, as supporters, we’ve heard enough empty words over the years. Only actions will now do.
I do agree with trying for quality over quantity. If they manage it, then they’ll deserve the credit.

"A supporter coming to the Stadium of Light to watch us against Wigan, I think they'd want to see a certain style of football and I think we're migrating towards that, and the data certainly suggests that," he said.

To get quality you need to be willing to spend the cash/wages...we obviously aren't brining in the players we want as we can't match their valuation or afford their wages, whether that's due to the salary restrictions, who knows.
Echo articles are always "exclusives" because the only person that can read them was the journalist who wrote the original on MS Word. Once on the site they're lost to the world

I've stopped clicking, even when it does load it lectures me that they've been proving quality news since the 13th century, I only have 1 free article left and would I like to give them my bank details

The only thing worse is whichever "publication" is reporting whatever Kevin "rent-a-gobshite" Phillips is spouting for cash this week.

In all seriousness its absolutely the right approach. I'd much prefer to see us play our youngsters, develop slowly but fail to go up this year rather than sign a bunch of has beens or league one journeymen on big contracts that might get us up but also leave us hamstrung next year and come back down (appreciate its not necessarily and either/or situation). Our problem for years has been short term thinking and panic buys. Lets make the right decisions not the quick ones.
Problem is, a lot of our supporters have a belief that you HAVE to get all of your transfers done before the first game and few give a shit about whether the player has a 1, 2 or 3 year contract. Its only when we are lumbered with poor players a year down the line that they are then bothered (and then its of course used to beat someone with a stick about making a rushed and stupid decision).

I usually read the headline in Sunderland Echo then look for the same article in the Chronicle. Of course it is a Mag paper but at least you can pick up the gist of what is going on without them continually wanting money.

Echo headlines usually lead into stories that reveal nowt anyway.
