Speakman on the transfer window so far - Echo article

He speaks sense but at the same time it isn't acceptable that we are heading into the first league game without a recognised fullback on either side.

There has to be a balance between value for money and absolutely shafting yourself from the start. We aren't talking millions needing to be spent, but we should have invested before now and brought some fullbacks in.
I genuinely don't think it's weakened us there - Winchester has performed well at rb in pre-season, and though Neil is not a left - back, he's a far better footballer than Mcfazdean, and looks like he has the intelligence to adapt.
I do accept there is a lack of cover though.

Pre-season is generally an unreliable judge of a sides potential.

Speakman can dress it up however he likes, having no fullbacks at all five days before the season starts is shocking for a professional club.

Unsurprisingly speaks well, has done every time since he joined. Actions is where he will be judged though, as others have said having no full backs at all at this stage is pathetic. Will wait until the end of the window before judging but he really needs to get it right next 3 weeks.

Same old shite.

"It is a difficult marketplace at the minute. We've found ourselves with offers to clubs and players and at the minute, not been able to get them over the line. That's not through any lack of intent from either the people operating the football club or who own the football club, but I think you have to be respectful of the marketplace at the moment"

translated:
"its not our fault our bids of 50p and a bag of mint imperials has been rejected".

Or maybe he’s telling the truth and it’s been difficult?

Starting to speak a lot of big words and a bit of bullshit if you ask me .....I'll wait until the end of the transfer window before assessing just how you have done bonny lad.

Source#; Sunderland Echo

"There will always be outliers [clubs] who are doing something a bit different, which is absolutely fine. (yer what?)

"What we won't do is pursue a deal that we don't think brings us the required quality on the pitch, or do something that won't benefit us in the short, medium or long term. (Sensible)

"GBE has come in which means you don't quite have the same natural pool of players that you'd like to dip into," he said. (Is this a gay slur?)

Though Sunderland are yet to spend a fee in the current market, Speakman says that is no reflection of the ambition of the club.
He expects that to have changed by the end of the window, and says that all the deals done represent investment.
"We've already made offers on players with significant fees attached to them," he said. (nice to know)

Can sense he's as frustrated as all of us.
Still seems to be confident that we will do the required business, but not as early as he would have liked and not journeyman panic buys.

We are a striker, two fullbacks and possibly a centre half sort.

Looks like Jebbison and the Exeter lad are the main targets...big few days for Speakman and the Club.

In all seriousness its absolutely the right approach. I'd much prefer to see us play our youngsters, develop slowly but fail to go up this year rather than sign a bunch of has beens or league one journeymen on big contracts that might get us up but also leave us hamstrung next year and come back down (appreciate its not necessarily and either/or situation). Our problem for years has been short term thinking and panic buys. Lets make the right decisions not the quick ones.

..that word 'data'..again. Does my head in. All a bit waffle tbh from Speakman....no surprise...
Nothing wrong with that. He’s right about getting the right players rather than just any old numbers. That’s why we’re in this league in the first place.

Fair enough imo, judge the squad when the window closes
Totally agree - we haven't seen Pritchard but Doyle and Evans look a cut above and retaining Embleton in the team is also a step forward. Yes, its all words but for the first time we seem to be planning to actually replace dross with more quality and if that takes time I back it. Players like Power and McFadzean were sub standard and last years window signing Graham and O'Brien when we new the salary cap was coming was bordering on criminal. This time we seem to be sticking to what is a sensible plan.

Well if we go off data, hoe come we signed Evans? Good player at this level but always has niggles.🤷‍♂️

He's spot on about Pritchard. Lots of people were riled up about not spending a fee to try and get Scott Fraser but Pritchard, if he can stay fit, is a better player. However, i'm hopeful that Embleton will outperform them both this season.
