Speakman’s transfer strategy backfired already

I still find it absolutely laughable that so many people are claiming it's would have been impossible to sign a striker as no one would sign if they weren't going to be first choice!

When did this become a thing?

We've signed squad players and backup goalkeepers, defenders and midfielders, why should it be so different with strikers? Is it really too much to ask to have 3 players to cover 2 positions??
And think how quick some of this board would turn on our 3rd choice! The knives are out for simms.

Criminal not bringing a proper striker in . Simms has looked poor also last few games. All this talk of x and y can play up front… Well there is your answer tonight. Where is the new signings? Just one on the bench. Maybe mowbray doesn’t rate them? Maybe they aren’t ready yet but we can’t just build a club on buying young players to sell on. Hopefully just an off night. Whole team was poor. If we are going to look to sell players for profit dan neil should be the first out the door. Heart the size of a pea. Can’t tackle , doesn’t score goals- awful. Embleton not much better. How many shite balls does he put in the box.
Dry your eyes man..
If Pritcharsdy had took his chance could have been a lot different.A we were unlucky not to get a pelanty.
Have to agree about Neilsy like.
Was a bad night at the office thats all.
Can't plan for your main man missing out 10 mins before kick off.
I reckon Diallosy will be a handful up front with Simmsy.

Moggasy will sort it by saturday

I think we’ll likely change system now. The problem we also face is Cirkin’s injury leaves us without a fit left back, so going 4 at the back opens up another problem as to who plays left back
Left back cover /competition was more of a concern than a forward. Alese or O'Nien id assume would go LB in back 4

I think you are correct. Like Middlesbrough last night and us for the last few seasons we should be comfortable with one up front and Simms showed enough last night to suggest he can do it. However, Mowbray, I'm sure, would like to go 433 with maybe Diallo and Clarke either side of Simms and Pritchrd just behind. Without a LB this will be difficult. Its time for Alese to step up - he's played for England right up to U20 and was seemingly rated by WHU fans so lets give him a chance to start.

Who the fuck was going to come in to be third choice that wasn't total shite?
And this is the really interesting thing. It is the perceived wisdom.

And, allegedly Broadhead didnt come for this reason.

But

Wigan have played 7 games this season. Broadhead has played two - both from the subs bench. In their last game they played 3 up top, then Fletcher came on and Broadhead didnt feature (and thats without Wyke making the 18) . Broadhead has gone to Wigan where he is arguably 5th choice - I assume you dont think he's shite?

Of the lads we've brought in - only Ballard and Simms are first choice. Ba, Michut, Bennettte, Diallo, Alese are second, third, fourth choice.

It's actually fairly unusual for new signings to be first choice in their position straight after they arrive.

so- its not true to say you if you are third choice then you are shite - as you seem to assert

I fully accept that a result was possible with things going our way and a chance being taken. Another goalscoring option from elsewhere in the team needs to be addressed (if it isn't already) because there'll be other games this season that a plan b is needed either in game (with an injury, etc) or at short notice before game like last night.

Thats the formation I'd go with. Happy enough for Alses to be given a chance

It's very early to be dismissing the new lads as 3rd/4th choice. Its a big move for them and a massive change in their life.

I think Mowbray will want to do that. He needs to put his stamp on it. If he goes for the same 11 he started with (with the exception of Cirkin) in the same shape I think people will have a right to be a bit concerned. What I liked about Mowbray was the way he changed the style of play at Blackburn from possession based to quick counter attacking because the intial style shipped too mant goals. Its suggested he;s far more of a thinker about the game than many give him credit for.

That's the nature of football. Recruitment within a budget comes with risks for all sides. Sheff Utd played the final stages of last season including playoffs without a single striker in the side. QPR have Dykes and then in reserve only Bonne who was loaned out last season and two kids. So if Dykes gets injured they are similar to us.

It was always going to be tough to sign someone of sufficient quality to either get in our side or happy to be a back up also.

Until l we get saddled with ones that aren’t very good.

Just because some opinions don’t fit in with your narrative?
Not really, it isn’t a narrative.

Why we didn’t sign Ibra to be 3rd choice striker is absolutely beyond me.

-Simms did what he could yesterday. Our defenders have no confidence passing the ball through the opposition to midfield so we kept going sideways an dbackwards. Dan Neil also needs to start being more aggresive. He may have more finesse than Embleton but Embleton has more end product, imo.

Changing formation worries me, I have to admit. I’ve loved watching us play with 3 at the back and we’ve seen the very best out of Gooch and Clarke. If we go 4 at the back do we drop Gooch? Who plays right back, Hume or ONein? Left back?

Criminal 😂😂
Even if we brought a striker in they wouldn't be of the quality of Stewart. We'd still be massively weakened. People need to get a grip
What about when we sell him as many were talking about yesterday, still a good plan, yes or no!

A short story.....

Last try. How did we convince Stewart to sign knowing he wouldn't be first choice if you can't sign players who aren't going to be first choice?
because stewrat was coming from a very low level and even league one would be attractive to him

not really my point. its in response to a post that stated if we get a striker who is prepared to come and be third choice behind S & S then he must be shite. I merely suggested others that are not first choice on arrival as counter arguments
