South Shields Sinkhole

Just heard on the radio that a road in South Shields has been closed in both directions after a sinkhole has appeared.

Forgive my ignorance but are sinkholes similar to the potholes I hear people talk about each Winter ?

Was wondering about that. A pothole sounds a bit nicer than a sinkhole. But size apart they are similar ? So basically a hole in the road.

My local knowledge on Shields is very limited am afraid but the sinkhole is near a busy road and a theatre apparently. Working on fixing it as we speak, the radio just said. Imagine waking up to a hole in the road on a Monday morning.

That doesn't sound good. Is it known why they appear ? I tried to Google a picture of it but ended up looking at massive ones from other parts of the world. They look like they could swallow up a van.

My understanding of the general use of the 2 terms:

Potholes are (usually) small holes in the top layer of the tarmac due to poor road maintenance.

Sinkholes are holes in the ground that happen because the Earth is dissolved/eroded from below.
